All Things BBQ: the Wrangler Family Barbecue
"Dated" puts it lightly. The place hasn't changed discernibly since Grandma ran the register and my uncles learned how to man a pit in the late '50s and early '60s...I guess when you've got it right there's no reason to change.

Gah! Ugh.
Awesome topic, cue the fireworks! I'd say, though, that maybe your David got lucky by getting a pass on the "no kids" thing, not that it's just assumed everyone gets the same free ride by playing the Man card...when I wasn't planning to have kids (as the only male child) I got plenty of "but who'll carry on the family name?" (as if we've got some sort of legacy like the Bushes or Kennedys going on) and "you'll change your mind when you meet the right girl." Then when I did, and she happened to already have a kid, I got tons more shit - I still needed to have a boy for that whole "family name" thing, and didn't I want a child that was "really mine," like I should somehow feel inferior for having adopted and committed my life to raising a daughter that I'm not biologically linked to - I actually permanently lost a contingent of family members over that one. That rant aside, these people that have ridiculously strong views on parenthood are asinine, and I almost enjoy pushing some of their buttons (usually when signed into my wife's spacebook account or whatever the kids are calling it these days). I had a great time when I didn't want kids, I'm having a great time raising a kid, and I'm going to be having an even better time when all of the people who ripped on me first for not wanting kids and then for having one (and who are subsequently breeding right about now) are still raising theirs when mine will be off to college and mom and dad will barely be 40. So bring the jokes about how life's greener somewhere else (in some way or another it always is) - just keep them funny. If I were as immature as most of the people my wife tells me about on bookface, I'd end this post with something along the lines of "Suck it, bitches!"

Cardiff's Masonic Lodge vacant
That sounds like a great idea from the Masons' point of view, but any kind of residential development offered for sale would be a non-starter on leased land. Even if a buyer were willing to accept less than full ownership of the property, banks are going to be hesitant to offer a trust deed on shares in a leasehold. It might work if you had a developer who wanted to put in apartments...

All Things BBQ: Prologue
Since you mention OB I assume one of the visits will include BBQ House, a venerable institution I've frequented since long before I became an OBecian. Hope you also get a chance to give Abbey's Real BBQ (the one on Clairemont Mesa, NOT Abbey's Real Texas BBQ on Miramar) a gander. Eons apart from the other shop with the same name and the finished-on-a-grill mediocre offerings from that one political activist whose wares everyone in town seems to think so highly of...if so - brisket, sweet cornbread, okra. That is all.

Dig a hole: Blockbuster Video
Ho hum. My local Blockbuster became a Starbucks (another scourge upon society) some time ago - my wife/amateur movie buff scored a handful of titles at the closing sale that seem to make her happy, which is the best thing there is to say about the event. I miss Paladin Video in "downtown" OB, and their clerks, a lot more...

Alcohol sales at new Ocean Beach CVS a hot topic
Visduh - There's already a Rite-Aid 2 blocks away that seems to have a security guard patrolling the front door a good portion of the time, though a drugstore rent-a-cop is kind of a novel idea in general outside of the beach area. There's also a CVS store about 2 miles inland in the Sports Arena (in an old Long's location - I liked Long's a lot more personally) area, so anyone really desiring CVS product and their meter-long receipts has it readily available (even by bus it's got to be less than a 15 minute trek, which is saying a lot). Other thoughts... ...excessive rent is what Hirmez says pushed him out in the first place. He also said that his inability to secure a long-term lease is the reason behind his hesitancy to upgrade the 1960s-era fixtures in the store that, while charmingly dated, left a lot to be desired in the way of keeping refrigerated foodstuffs fresh...what this town really needs is a full-service grocer. Right now there's the Olive Tree, which is insanely limited on selection and quite pricey due to the size of the store, or People's, which is also pricey and not a true "full-service" shop in that they carry no meat or meat by-products. Stump's (IGA), Vons, and Ralph's are all a mile or two outside the village and thus of little use for those who travel on foot or, like me, want something within a five-minute bike ride at least for the purpose of picking up "that one forgotten ingredient."...Hirmez said some time ago that he was going to turn the old B of A building (which he owns) into a new version of the Apple Tree supermarket - why hasn't that happened yet, and will he catch the same kind of hell trying to get a liquor license there?...the CVS claim of 1.5% of floor space (244 square feet out of 15,000) devoted to alcohol and 5% of gross sales is laughable. After frequenting the Rite Aid that they'll be competing with for years (as well as virtually every other drug chain in San Diego), it's readily apparent that the floor space devoted to booze is closer to 5%, and from the easily observable cart contents of the people that surround me it's reasonable to assume that adult beverages have to constitute at least 15% (three times what CVS claims, and I'm being generous here) of total revenues projected...on a personal note, my mother-in-law doesn't drive and has lost complete access to groceries except when getting a ride with my wife or me. I know there are a significant number of people like her in town, some hurting worse than her without access to a borrowed car to leave town to buy food... tl;dr: Dave calls shenanigans on the whole mess.

Afton Canyon: Grand Canyon of the Mojave
Better pro tip - under no circumstances should you allow a moving train within inches of your head. I'm incredibly lucky that an unsecured chain hanging off a train in similar circumstances many years ago didn't do a whole lot worse than split my lip open...
— November 4, 2013 11:27 p.m.
None
But don't local theaters also get a cut on those pre-show adverts?
— October 14, 2013 10:43 p.m.
Cardiff’s Chevron gas station NOT for sale
Yep - Trulia, Zillow and the like are pretty much garbage used by agents to generate phone calls on properties that are already in escrow, already sold, or were mis-entered in the first place. Most agents will have a search tool on their own websites that link directly to the local multiple listing service and is updated daily.

All Things BBQ: the Wrangler Family Barbecue
"Dated" puts it lightly. The place hasn't changed discernibly since Grandma ran the register and my uncles learned how to man a pit in the late '50s and early '60s...I guess when you've got it right there's no reason to change.— December 9, 2013 8:51 a.m.
Gah!
If I were as immature as most of the people my wife tells me about on bookface, I'd end this post with something along the lines of "Suck it, bitches!"— December 5, 2013 7:08 p.m.
It might work if you had a developer who wanted to put in apartments...— December 2, 2013 10:01 a.m.
That is all.— November 15, 2013 11:22 p.m.
I miss Paladin Video in "downtown" OB, and their clerks, a lot more...— November 13, 2013 12:02 a.m.
“HUSTUSA” protests President Obama in Rancho Santa Fe
Looks a lot like the guy who <a href"http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/news-ticker…">declined an interview</a> when I was covering an immigration rally outside Darrell Issa's office a few months ago... Edit: related content link isn't popping up - http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/news-ticker…— November 11, 2013 10:44 p.m.
I know there are a significant number of people like her in town, some hurting worse than her without access to a borrowed car to leave town to buy food... tl;dr: Dave calls shenanigans on the whole mess.— November 9, 2013 11:54 p.m.
Afton Canyon: Grand Canyon of the Mojave
Better pro tip - under no circumstances should you allow a moving train within inches of your head. I'm incredibly lucky that an unsecured chain hanging off a train in similar circumstances many years ago didn't do a whole lot worse than split my lip open...— November 4, 2013 11:27 p.m.
None
But don't local theaters also get a cut on those pre-show adverts?— October 14, 2013 10:43 p.m.
Cardiff’s Chevron gas station NOT for sale
Yep - Trulia, Zillow and the like are pretty much garbage used by agents to generate phone calls on properties that are already in escrow, already sold, or were mis-entered in the first place. Most agents will have a search tool on their own websites that link directly to the local multiple listing service and is updated daily.— October 1, 2013 10:23 p.m.
