Recycling robbers
I've seen police interrogating people "canning" twice in the last few months out in OB - apparently once a can hits the recycling bin it's city property...not sure if they use recycling revenues as an offset for pickup or what, but although it does seem to be both a common practice and one authorities are making an attempt to crack down on. Personally the only time it bothers me is when they fling trash around while they're digging, leaving me to pick it up later...usually after I call the city to remind them that their driver missed my black can pickup (grey can for most of the county) for the second or third time this month.

Fast-food workers protest wage theft
Visduh - what makes these McDonald's cases unique (and causes me to speculate that suing other corporate headquarters rather than individual franchisees) is that McDonald's allegedly did pressure the franchisees to meet what it calls "labor cost percentage targets," and may have advised specific behaviors such as making employees clock out during lulls in business but not leave, clocking them back in when business picked up. If that can be proved, the plaintiffs may have a case. Anything less and the cases are likely swiftly dismissed.

Rally for paid sick leave, higher minimum wage

I haven't seen a better take on this topic from someone who hasn't personally been through it. Kudos.

Recent lawsuit raises questions about libelous Yelping
Meanwhile, Amy's Baking Company rakes in the cash off their negative reviews by bringing "hate-[insert activity here]" to dining... I've had a business owner threaten to sue me for publishing a PM wherein he calls me a "Chicken 5hit" (yes, with a numeral) on the site...my general feeling is that most of the businesses who'll go so far to sue over negative reviews will be piloted by hotheads such as in the Eater example who will shoot themselves in the foot. Still, a bit chilling to think about the potential repercussions of putting anything negative in the public sphere, even though I'm not really much of a Yelper for the reasons Ian mentions in regard to the site's widely alleged ad sales tactics, and the preponderance of recent reviews of questionable quantity. These days, I let Ed Bed tell me where to eat or, if I've got money burning a hole in my pocket, Misters Pike or Hernandez (it seems I'm already familiar with most of Ian's low-brow favorites).

Eating burgers in boat country
Tried this place for the first time last weekend after having it on my radar for a while - wife and I found the cheese steak sandwich and jalapeno burger completely serviceable, despite the sauteed peppers having no bite whatsoever and the burger disintegrating upon first attempt at handling it (I have no beef with fork-and-knife beef!). Disturbing - expired product on the table. I understand that a lot of places refill condiment bottles even though they're labeled single use, but if you've got a date prominently stamped on a bottle that says your mustard went bad last November, don't stick that in front of your customer. Also had a couple pints that I'm very familiar with (the second was actually a much-more-generic-than-my-usual-tastes Fat Tire just to confirm) - the "unique" taste of the beer here suggested to me that the draught lines are more than overdue for a cleaning.

All Things BBQ: Valley Farm BBQ Stand
I know I've commented on a lot of places, but I wouldn't have imagined you'd have even bothered to hit up this little shack - huge kudos, sir! It's rare that I grab prepared meats here, but the pre-seasoned offerings inside the store are so good they (almost) make people forget the insane tastiness of the world's best asada meats offered up by the Ramey family out int Brawley...

Sausage-wise
Ten pounds? You'll knock that out in no time...I was in the area today and also thought of Chad's piece a few months ago, thought I'd stop in. But alas, my journey's a bit longer - nine pounds down, 56 to go...

All Things BBQ: Abbey's Real Bar-B-Q
Pretty much spot-on. When firing on all cylinders, they're doing the best that can be done with an electric smoker, but there are times the meat seems like it was a bit rushed, the brisket is a little gristly, or the ribs are a tad dry. Love the cornbread, but the beans are a big unknown factor - I'm a fan of the unique flavor profile, but it seems like they sometimes come out under-cooked. Not the absolute undisputed best in town, but when I used to work a desk job a couple blocks from here it was a totally solid spot to hit up for lunch 2-3 times a month, or as often as I could find a co-worker to split an order of stuff with me. I'm not a normal human in that one Dave = two to two-and-a-half Ians, so if the quantity is too much for me to eat alone it's decidedly too much.

Protest over Mission Trails mountain-bike trail closures
I remember riding Mission Trails in the early '90s...we weren't welcome then either...

Personally the only time it bothers me is when they fling trash around while they're digging, leaving me to pick it up later...usually after I call the city to remind them that their driver missed my black can pickup (grey can for most of the county) for the second or third time this month.— April 4, 2014 8:14 p.m.
Anything less and the cases are likely swiftly dismissed.— March 19, 2014 9:57 p.m.
Rally for paid sick leave, higher minimum wage
I have no excuse for that particular typo.— March 13, 2014 10:53 p.m.
Ever after
I haven't seen a better take on this topic from someone who hasn't personally been through it. Kudos.— March 13, 2014 10:41 p.m.
These days, I let Ed Bed tell me where to eat or, if I've got money burning a hole in my pocket, Misters Pike or Hernandez (it seems I'm already familiar with most of Ian's low-brow favorites).— March 2, 2014 10:34 p.m.
Also had a couple pints that I'm very familiar with (the second was actually a much-more-generic-than-my-usual-tastes Fat Tire just to confirm) - the "unique" taste of the beer here suggested to me that the draught lines are more than overdue for a cleaning.— February 26, 2014 11:08 p.m.
All Things BBQ: Valley Farm BBQ Stand
I know I've commented on a lot of places, but I wouldn't have imagined you'd have even bothered to hit up this little shack - huge kudos, sir! It's rare that I grab prepared meats here, but the pre-seasoned offerings inside the store are so good they (almost) make people forget the insane tastiness of the world's best asada meats offered up by the Ramey family out int Brawley...— February 13, 2014 11:02 p.m.
Sausage-wise
Ten pounds? You'll knock that out in no time...I was in the area today and also thought of Chad's piece a few months ago, thought I'd stop in. But alas, my journey's a bit longer - nine pounds down, 56 to go...— January 30, 2014 11:07 p.m.
I'm not a normal human in that one Dave = two to two-and-a-half Ians, so if the quantity is too much for me to eat alone it's decidedly too much.— January 25, 2014 12:09 a.m.
Protest over Mission Trails mountain-bike trail closures
I remember riding Mission Trails in the early '90s...we weren't welcome then either... http://bit.ly/1dhrKY4— January 12, 2014 11:08 p.m.
