Robin Williams, RIP
Some junior high buddies and I snuck in to see "The World According To Garp" because it had Mork in it. Most of them left about 20 minutes into the film but I stayed and enjoyed the film. Still my favorite Robin Williams movie. Between 1987 - 1989, I was an unabashed fan of Robin. "GMV", "Dead Poets", and "A Night At The Met" were all released during this time. One special night - October 19th, 1991, Johnny Carson had Robin and Jonathan Winters on the same show. I have the near complete show on VHS still; the YouTube video below is only a fraction of what was shown. That same year, Robin fell out of favor with me for appearing in "Hook". I tolerated him from then on. I was forced to watch "Patch Adams" on a dinner/date with another couple and my wife. I was doing my best impersonation of George C. Scott - "TURN IT OFFFFFFFF!!!" A YouTube video once existed of Robin on various talk shows (i.e. Regis & Kelly, The Today Show, Leno, Letterman) around this time. He did the exact same jokes and the same manic schtick on each show. So much for Mr. Inventive and Original. Rest in peace Garp.— August 20, 2014 7:39 p.m.
Dig a hole: the Merrie side of Lauren Bacall
When I think of Bacall, I think of her near zombie performance next to Edward G. in "Key Largo". Wildcat! Rest in peace Betty Joan Perske.— August 14, 2014 4:23 p.m.
Marx Bros. invade Ken Cinema to benefit the San Diego Opera
And now, on with the opera. Let joy be unconfined. Let there be dancing in the streets, drinking in the saloons, and necking in the parlor. Play Don!— May 13, 2014 3:57 a.m.
Dig a hole: Lee Marshall, voice of Tony the Tiger
The town of Battle Creek, MI hasn't seen a darker day since the original Corn Flakes rooster was found beheaded.— May 13, 2014 3:54 a.m.
San Diego Film Critics Society holds quasi-annual awards luncheon
> Matthew Lickona, sporting a new buzz cut and Hawaiian shirt freshly imported from the Islands by his lovely bride, Deirdre, just back from vacation. You could still smell the Don Ho in it. It must have reeked of the ocean or tiny bubbles. If it was really Don Ho, you'd smell the coconut flavored rum. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2014/m…— May 13, 2014 3:52 a.m.
Ken Cinema remains a Landmark in every sense
How do you do, ladies and gentlemen... this is Bob "Support the Ken Cinema" Hope, reminding all you Netflixers and multiplexers that a San Diego Landmark is not going to go dark, and for that we have one person to Marks. = canned laughter = Hey, that Scott Marks is something, isn't he? He fought against the closing of the Ken Cinema and won... wish I could say the same when "Cancel My Reservation" was cancelled at the theaters. = canned laughter = But this is a great achievement for the town of San Diego. It just goes to show that good movies need not be viewed online or at the multiplex. Now only if Hollywood could make some good movies. = canned laughter = Remember folks to support your single screen theaters. They represent American at their very best. On May 8th, I'll be opening the new Chula Vista Shopping Mall; I hope to see you there. And don't forget to buy Christmas Seals; they help out all year round. G'night! = canned applause / "Thanks For The Memory" plays http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2014/a…— April 23, 2014 8:34 p.m.
Dig a hole: Mickey Rooney
My favorite Mickey memories: 1.) A direct quote from his 1991 autobiography: Ava had something different. She had this little extra-it was almost like a little warm mouth-that would reach up and grab me and take me in and make my, uh, my heart swell. She also had big brown nipples, which, when she was aroused, stood out like some double-long golden California raisins. And I sucked those warm breasts, I did taste her mother's milk. 2.) "Sugar Babies" pushed Mickey back into the spotlight and in the black. Financially secure for the first time in decades, Rooney decided to sink ALL of his earnings from the Broadway show into a restaurant. The Mickey Rooney Star-BQ Restaurant opened in 1980 on Wilcox Avenue in Los Angeles. I remember reading an article at the time that quoted Mickey "We're going to employ down and out Munchkins as kitchen help." The establishment only lasted two years (see pictures below). RIP Mickey. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2014/a… http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2014/a… http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2014/a…— April 11, 2014 7:19 p.m.

Audrey Hepburn: junk food merchant
No one's taking writing credit for this one? Hmmmmmmmm... Seems the makers of Mars forgot the Astaire Celebrity Image Protection Act which was passed after the estate of Fred sued to protect his image. The law's in place - enforce it! The Astaire spot was in 1997. Here's The Three Stooges for Master Card from the early 2000s, John Wayne hawking Coors Beer from 1990, and the one that started it all: the granddaddy. Hershey's from 1987. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7txeOlujTc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPsc2uotAKo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dZ3svPD32Y— March 25, 2014 3:03 p.m.
