Airport ’77 : the spirit is willing, but the script is weak
Actual quote from Walter Wanger to a gaggle of studio executives: "You chaps just talk about agents. I’m the only one who ever did anything about them." And how, how, howwwww can you talk about this movie and NOT mention Christopher Lee? He's married to Lee Grant's boozy, bitchy character and he masterfully channels his inner George Sanders multiple times: GRANT: If it isn't, just tell me. I'll stop acting like an idiot. LEE: Why should I when you're so efficient at it? SPOILER ALERT: Lee's death scene where he floats his way out of the film is one of the most unintentionally funny moments in the movie.— August 28, 2021 6:20 a.m.
Airport 1975: credits read like a Love Boat passenger manifest
If memory serves, we are introduced to George "Patroni" Kennedy in the original "Airport" movie sucking the tonsils of his wife only to be interrupted by a phone call from Burt Lancaster: "My four kids are away at my mother's, I'm home alone with Marie, and I'm not available.... SLURP SLURP". For this "Airport", we get the sanitized version of Joe's family. Booooo. Charlton Heston relates that he had begun working on this movie only fifteen hours after he had finished the final shot on Earthquake (1974). Disaster movies were all the rage...— August 28, 2021 6:10 a.m.
The disco roller-boogie film that introduced audiences to Patrick Swayze
"Roller Boogie" was the last film Linda Blair had clout; she was dating a Canadian actor named David Kennedy and insisted he play the lead opposite her. Several weeks into filming, she and he split up and to make their leading lady happy, the producers gave Kennedy's role to Jim Bray. And Marks... I bet you didn't know this... "Roll Bounce" was filmed at MY LOCAL ROLLER RINK in Lynwood, IL - just a mile down the road from my casa. Twenty years later, the rink still has ALL of the movie dressings in place, they use it in their marketing/advertising, and people as far away as Australia have visited the place because of the movie.— August 28, 2021 5:59 a.m.
Action in the 1970s: Gene Hackman, Walter Matthau, and Whit Bissell
Long time poster, first time with the new web design. Love what you've done with the place. During his addiction scenes, Hackman memorably blurted out "Mickey Mantle sucks!". The filmmakers now had to clear it with the Mick or excise the line. A studio rep traveled to his home in Dallas with a print of the film where Mantle and his lawyer were eager to hear what the hubbub was all about. When they got to the moment, both the lawyer and Mickey howled with laughter. The rep shut the projector off but both wanted to see the end of the movie. After the credits rolled, Mantle signed the waiver and left the line in. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- One of Joseph Sargent's greatest contributions to "Pelham" was the casting of Jerry Stiller as Sgt. Rico Patrone. Stiller was given much latitude to ad-lib his dialogue and came up with several memorable lines: "It turned out to be a cantalope", "Even great men have to pee", and this one: https://youtu.be/9fQG9Zhv2_I?t=28— May 17, 2020 6:19 a.m.
Forky: a life on film
It was originally going to be "Bringing Up Forky" until Howard Hawks stepped in and said "a leopard can do the same job for 1/8 of the cost". And Forky got the boot... http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2019/j…— July 26, 2019 1:03 p.m.

Ed Zwick’s Trial by Fire: Burning bathos

South Bay physical media pull with Kurt Russell, Scorsese’s Rolling Stones, and a Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western

South Bay physical media pull with Kurt Russell, Scorsese’s Rolling Stones, and a Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western
When I saw this in 2008 in San Diego, the long tracking shot at the end had Scorsese shouting an emphatic "UP! UP!" to the camera. The camera ended up over a cityscape with a full moon that turned into the famous Rolling Stones tongue logo. Immediately following that, there was a dedication to Ahmet Ertegün. The audience around me was dumbfounded: "Who's that?". In the silence of the theater, I stated out loud "He was the founder of Atlantic Records". Turns out he was at this concert in a VIP area backstage when he tripped and struck his head on the concrete floor. He remained in the hospital until his death. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2019/m…— May 5, 2019 1:16 p.m.
Between the covers, between the sheets
Sounds like this film would make a hellacious double feature with "Last Vegas" with Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline, and Mary Steenburgen.— May 17, 2018 8:54 p.m.
