Mayor’s top aides swap special interest places
It's "toilet-to-tap" all the time with the Lincoln Club set, isn't it?— July 8, 2017 12:30 p.m.
Mission Valley money
**UPDATE:** Apparently the Powers That Be are *Reader* Comments readers—Tony's LinkedIn has now been changed to "Co Founder past Chairman of the Board / President, One San Diego, March 2014 – January 2017 (2 years 11 months)." Since I know you'll see this, Mr. Young, please do us all a solid and take down Kev-boy, the Great White Nope.— July 8, 2017 11:59 a.m.
Mission Valley money
Wait a minute: Tony Young's LinkedIn profile still says he's "[chairman of the board/president][1]" of Kev-boy's campaign money proxy operation One San Diego; but he's been scrubbed from [their website][2], which says both positions are held by Lani Lutar. And now he's leading those opposing Kev's SuckerCity scheme? I'd *really* like to know what's going on here. If there was a major falling-out, Tony would know where all the bodies are buried. Maintenance assessment fee fight flares up in Del Cerro
I've made the [same arguments before][1] that the MAD opponents present here. This time around, I'll just emphasize how much the city is invested in strategically neglecting neighborhoods in order to convince property owners that putting themselves on the hook to fund a maintenance assessment district is their only option. Once one is in place, anyone complaining about services to city hall is told to take it up with the local MAD. Meanwhile, MADs free up the money the city would have to use for your area to spend elsewhere. It's a win-win for the city. "[W]hat are we supposed to do, hold the city's feet to the fire...?" **YES!** That's the point of having government collect our property taxes in the first place: to ensure that those spending them are accountable. If you think it's too hard getting politicians to do what you want, you haven't tried petitioning the cliques that always end up running these MADs—which have shockingly little oversight. And if you don't like a MAD, *you* have to get the city council to vote for dissolution or run a petition drive to get it repealed. [Read for yourself][2]. I for one am tired of rewarding shiftless behavior in government. Elected officials are not children that you sigh and perform their chores when they shirk them. It's high time we remember why they are called "public servants." La Jolla’s unsaintly mogul
Guess Donnie isn't [afraid of bad face-lifts][1] so long as they've been done to men. [1]: http://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-tweets-mika-wa…— July 5, 2017 10:20 a.m.
Ramadan, no cheating
As a freethinker myself, I agree that most religious activity is foolishness. But as a freethinker, I believe it's each person's right to be foolish (with the usual caveats for causing harm to others, etc.). The article points out that he isn't imposing his practices on his wife or children, who aren't Muslim; and that as the product of a mixed-religion marriage himself, he had to flee his native country. So I'd say no one has a right to question his choices—especially as it seems he is more tolerant and accepting than his critics.— July 3, 2017 2 p.m.
Summer Stephan's fake NYT news experience
Surprised they didn't compare her to Barbara Gordon, who as the intrepid daughter of a police commissioner, has a thirst for justice running in her blood— June 30, 2017 3:15 p.m.
Summer Stephan's fake NYT news experience
Great digging by *CJR*. Most of these advertorials are paid for by or on behalf of the subjects written about. Let's see if there's a money trail leading to this fake news.— June 30, 2017 2:05 p.m.
Humane Society takes over from San Diego County
Despite any cost effectiveness or other arguments, for me the concern with *any* outsourcing of public services is what private parties cannot (and should not) do: exercise police power. County Animal Services has the ability to cite for violations and will show up with city police or county sheriffs to enforce their decisions. I can't see the Humane Society having that kind of power or relationship—nor would I want them to. As was [just commented][1] about Civic San Diego, our elected leaders keep begging off their governance responsibilities to those with no public accountability (but lots of hidden benefits for the officials approving these arrangements). And whatever excuse or backstory they use to do so should never distract us from seeing this for what it is: unacceptable. Civic San Diego employee says agency is ripe for corruption
Wow, just when I thought this crony cesspool couldn't get any more polluted. Skimming 10% right off the top of every donation they hand over to charity isn't being a "fiscal sponsor"—it's being a pimp! There is absolutely **zero** reason for anyone legitimately giving to a charity to use a middleman who takes a cut; unless, as this story reveals, it's really about buying favor with that middleman.— June 29, 2017 1:30 p.m.
