Owner of fact-checking website, Snopes.com, considers lawsuit allegations to be fake news
The more I read about this saga, the more confused I become. Shame there isn't another site like [Snopes][1] to fact-check it for me. But seriously, it *is* frightening that there are so few other sites on the Internet that specialize in fact-checking clickbait and fake claims in email chains—which is why Snopes is [hated by the alt-right][2]. They perform an invaluable service, so I really hope that everyone involved gets this drama behind them quickly and the site can continue with its integrity intact. Man whose home is metal box in Vista park admits drug sales
Sounds to me like Harris bit the hand that fed him. Back in the day, being given permission to sleep in a barn or shed was better than nothing and something a transient could be grateful for. Unfortunately, life-long scum like Harris prove that we need rules against such kindness. The conservancy head should be grateful Harris isn't a smarter criminal, or else he might have figured out how to shake him down with a lawsuit for endangerment, human confinement, squatters rights, unpaid wages, or some other trumped-up charge.— July 24, 2017 5:31 p.m.
District Attorney yet to file charges against former Poway Schools chief
I might have thought that county supervisor-aspirant Bonnie Donothing would have left this as an easy win for Summer Incumbent to prosecute, but then realized he's accused of general corruption, self-dealing, lack of transparency, and arrogant dismissal of following rules. Of course they're not going to go after him—he's one of them!— July 24, 2017 3:33 p.m.
Former Chipotle co-CEO to revamp La Jolla home
I wonder if the finished remodel will be 6 bedrooms/[22 bathrooms][1]? [1]: https://www.foodbeast.com/news/chipotle-noro-2017…— July 20, 2017 4:29 p.m.
Faulconer’s mid-summer S.F. daydream
...Or if the local Dems last year hadn't rolled over for Irwin Jacob's "Plaza de Panama 2" fever dream and let Kev run unopposed (or once Ed Harris ran, leave him twisting in the wind) in order to keep collecting that Qualcomm money for other races.— July 20, 2017 11:46 a.m.
Faulconer’s mid-summer S.F. daydream
Every day is [Opposite Day][1] for Kev-boy. He has done nothing to improve infrastructure, reduce homelessness, or create safer neighborhoods; so of course he claims otherwise while on the campaign trail [not running for governor][2]. But even so, calling his old-school back-room dealings to sell out public land and partisan punishment of political opponents a "new face of California Republicanism" is too much of a dissonance to be cognitive. Luxury apartments rising at Texas Street and Howard
Unbelievable. How or why could Community Housing Works be allowed to renege on their plans, especially when they violate the conditions set by city council? I'm fairly certain CHW received special terms to acquire and develop these parcels, if not also federal grants or other matching or charitable funding. Now a key 1.21 acre location at the intersection of two transit corridors is going to be co-opted as a luxury development for those who won't ever use public transportation. CHW isn't supposed to flip properties to turn a profit. [Their mission][1] is to build and own "attractive, safe, and sustainable apartment communities in California that...give people living on a limited income the chance to find home stability, pay an affordable rent, [and] be part of a strong community." Even assuming they use the proceeds to develop a rental property elsewhere, it won't benefit from a better location or 2013 property prices—and, unlike this site, may require the destruction of existing housing. Hard to see this as anything other than a complete betrayal of their purpose. [1]: http://chworks.org/about-us/mission-vision/— July 18, 2017 4:30 p.m.
What lies in Clairemont's future?
Ah, but here's the rub: state law says that new development, and thus any forthcoming developer impact fees, **cannot** be used to make up a *pre-existing deficit* in public amenities—whether they be parks or libraries, schools or fire stations. Which is a great "chicken or the egg" catch-all for all parties to avoid doing anything to mitigate any proposed added density. My personal favorite is when pro-developer shills shake their heads and say that, also per state law, developer impact fees are placed in trust and *cannot* be used for General Fund expenses. Yeah, I'd like to see the city auditor hunt that dog.— July 13, 2017 8:59 p.m.
Engaging fake news
"For often in battle there is no doubt that if a man will throw away his arms, and fall on his knees before his pursuers, he may escape death; and in other dangers there are other ways of escaping death, **if a man is willing to say and do anything**. The difficulty, my friends, is not in avoiding death, but in avoiding *unrighteousness*; for that runs faster than death." —*[Apology][1]* [1]: http://classics.mit.edu/Plato/apology.html— July 13, 2017 7:55 p.m.
Ed Fletcher III spends the Fourth in prison
Also making that photo and story more than a little ironic is that Kim Fletcher is still on [the board of][1] "Californians for Population Stabilization," [which advocates][2] against immigrants and for family planning. Even relatives of hypocritical nativists can't escape that you can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family.
