Protest at alleged slumlord's house in Point Loma
The importance of the city council meeting on Dec 12 cannot be overstated. Foreign capital is devouring current housing and consumes all new stock as soon as it goes on the market. There's simply no way we will ever be able to build our way out of the housing crisis when individuals with mortgages can't compete against investors paying cash. Since it isn't possible to "just say no" to investment ownership however, the only hope is to clamp down on the number of units any owner of record can rent short term within city limits while limiting the number of short-term rentals within any area. There's no reason our elected officials can't be as hard-nosed and strict on this issue as they have been with marijuana regulation.— November 27, 2017 11:45 a.m.
Senator's bill to stave off utilities' rape of ratepayers?
Three cheers to Sen. Hill! Now the question is, will San Diego and Orange counties' state senators join with him and co-sponsor this bill?— November 20, 2017 10:30 a.m.
Five white men walk into Chicano Park...
Aww, poor white supremacists trying to freely exercise privilege get triggered when people actually call them out on it. Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences; and saying you're "not racist or white supremacist" while your actions speak otherwise doesn't mean others are obliged to walk away. This low-rent paralipsis, where white trash today think a phrase like "I'm not *saying* Chicanos/blacks/women/LGBT people are un-American and inferior" is a magic spell that protects them from others knowing they mean the opposite, is the direct and toxic effect of having a fellow racist in The White House who does the same on the daily.— November 19, 2017 8:22 a.m.
Cory Briggs sues Navy, Edison, SDG&E, Dept. of Defense
Sorry to hear that Briggs and Aguirre may be at odds over this. But it doesn't appear that Aguirre has had a "productive" [relationship with SDG&E][1], or that [arguments for off-site disposal][2] are being considered seriously enough. Seems to me that we need a group like Public Watchdogs to throw down the gauntlet to those responsible rather than rely only on goodwill for good results. Hotel barons circle convention-center board vacancy
That is a *big* loophole. So could they pick someone from a [Radisson][2] or a [Marriott][3] in Rancho Bernardo and claim there's no connection to any of their properties here? Or [the group that owns Town & Country also owns L'Auberge Del Mar][1]—could they have someone from the latter property serve on the board? There's just no way to let any hotelier make decisions about the convention center without creating an inherent conflict of interest. Qualcomm surely worth more than $70 a share
It is worth considering whether San Diego wouldn't be better off without Qualcomm, at least without the Jacobs family at their helm, given how Irwin has devoted his resources to [ruining Balboa Park][1] ([buying off the local Dems][2] to let [Faulconer's win cement support][3] for his plan), and how Jeff threw his weight around to [destroy Seaport Village][4]. Councilman Cate can use campaign cash for legal, PR costs
I cannot believe the FPPC made such an ill-reasoned decision. They *might* be right **if** it were true that "The lawsuit against the City to release the memorandum clearly arises directly out of the councilmember's activities, duties, or status as an officer." But it doesn't: the suit arose from committing "an egregious breach of public trust" by violating the terms of his conduct for office. He violated city policy on council approval to waive attorney-client privilege specifically to hand off a confidential memo to the party it was written about—who also just happened to be [his campaign contributors][1]. By the same reasoning, it would be okay for him to use campaign funds to defend himself against molestation charges, if the alleged offense happened during office hours. It simply can't be right to let serving in office serve as a catch-all to excuse behavior outside the scope of that office. Historic value of O.B. kit home debated
Actually, it's the accusations against SOHO that are "total BS." The second page of the article makes this clear: "If the Feigley House can’t remain at its current address, could it be moved elsewhere? That’s what Coons and his organization want. “[W]hen a building has been cleared and is still very clearly an intact historic resource, we support relocating the building, but preferably still within the same neighborhood,” Amie K. Hayes, a Heritage Organisation historic resources specialist, said in an email." SOHO is constantly working to bring buyers and sellers together to save properties—and yes, even uses its own money to restore properties for resale. They understand that historic preservation has to include plans for active reuse and commercial viability or else saving a resource will only be temporary.— November 8, 2017 11:31 a.m.
Old bike-sharing company, new plan
Well now this does deepen the mystery. Their statistic that 85% of all users are "casual riders, often tourists" implies these were the most used stations. Was the city too lazy to apply for a programmatic conditional use permit? Or are they trying to change the user statistics to bolster the "multimodal transit" fiction? And doesn't this mean that **all** these stations need a CDP, since they're being installed in public rights of way and eliminating parking?— November 2, 2017 3:50 p.m.
Ex-councilmember Frye sniffs conflict, sues city
I can understand Kev-boy wanting the power to hire crony lawyers for fat fees, but shame on the city council for going along with him. Can only guess it's so they can beg off any responsibility when these things, as always, go south. Cheers to Donna Frye: still doing more for the people of San Diego than those currently holding elected office.— November 2, 2017 3:30 p.m.
