Seniors try to save old Adams Avenue cop shop
I hope you're right, but I won't believe it til I see it.— January 23, 2018 5:38 p.m.
Monster manse for SDSU’s new prez
That amazing Mid-Century architecture is worth the rest—unless the renovations were so tacky they destroyed the original interior.— January 23, 2018 5:23 p.m.
Seniors try to save old Adams Avenue cop shop
So the existing building "is slated to be demolished," but "[a] new one will be built down the block"? Something doesn't pass the sniff test here. That property is in a prime location and extends into the park. While it's possible to understand that the building may need replacing, there's no justification for taxpayers to pay to demo it when the city is putting the land up for sale—especially when there's no earmark for the proceeds to go toward paying for a new site and building: "continuing to advocate for funding for the plan..." This sounds like yet another [backroom deal by READ][1], with a developer campaign contributor [already handpicked][2] to get this cleared parcel for chump change to build luxury town homes, leaving residents with nothing but political hot air. Little Italy’s big — massive redevelopment
A beautifully written and revealing story. What becomes more clear each year is that overdevelopment is leaving little left of Little Italy than a place name and vanished history. Beware of shills like [LiMandri][1] who cloak their private enrichment at public expense in civic claptrap: *You will know them by their fruits*. This article is a cautionary tale for everyone who genuinely cares about the character of their neighborhood to recognize what other developer conspirators really mean when they promote "[Little Italy–style development][2]." Burglary victim leads cops to crooks
I understand that's what they say, and that they mean it as an excuse. But again, in what line of work would the complaint that one is "overworked and underpaid" (which is basically *every* occupation in America) be accepted for not doing **anything** except clocking in?— January 17, 2018 10:57 a.m.
Burglary victim leads cops to crooks
From personal experience, I know the SDPD's mantra is, "I hope you don't expect us to catch who did this." In no other line of work would it ever be acceptable to cheerfully disavow having to do one's job. Remember this the next time they tell you those in the 'thin blue line' have the most dangerous job ([they don't][1]) or deserve to be able to [retire at age 50][2]. Hotel union compensates Briggs, GOP lobbyist
This...is very weird, and very interesting. It seems like a redux of [2016's Prop D][1], but without the baggage of an opposing [downtown stadium scheme][2]. While it would still keep San Diego's transient occupancy taxes [competitive][3], I think a deep read of the fine print for the allocations are in order—especially if they are these projected totals Matt is right to suspect, or set percentages based on actual income. In any event, I'm suspicious of complicated mechanisms to fund specific earmarks rather than going into a General Fund as is usual, but I'm willng to be convinced. Ensenadan to be prosecuted for abortion
This is the near past the far-right is steadily dragging our country back into. Except they want to eliminate [any basis for abortion][1] and [punish it as murder][2]. Don't think it can't ([or doesn't][3]) happen here without pushing back to secure individuals' rights over their own bodies. Porn thief in our midst?
When porn producers lie and [ripoff their models][1] it's just business, but when it happens to them it's a crime. Totally different! [1]: https://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2017/sep/12/t…— January 14, 2018 11:40 a.m.
Nuclear waste at the beach saves money is why
Water is wet, the sky is blue, and Edison officials are corrupt. The last one at least we could theoretically have some control over. Except water is wet, the sky is blue, and our politicians are corrupt. Which means we'll soon have "San Diego is uninhabitable" added as a truism.— January 11, 2018 5:15 p.m.
