Santee townsfolk want Dirty Chris dealt with
Prop 47 doesn't make prosecutors plead down violent felonies to misdemeanors, or stop judges from considering a defendant's criminal history. Nor does it compel the police to fail to enforce the laws or not confront someone posing an imminent threat—especially as well known to them as Browning—out of concern for their own safety. But most of all, Prop 47 doesn't explain how anyone was allowed to become a menace before November 2014. I believe those involved in the incarceration complex have a vested interest in letting scofflaws make things just miserable enough for the community that they get Prop 47 repealed and back in business.— July 24, 2018 4:11 p.m.
Cosplay at Comic-Con
Tenth photo down is actually Mantis from *Guardians*, not Gamora. Cool pics tho.— July 20, 2018 9:55 p.m.
Investor-owned utilities with sky-high rates
I see the usual suspects plumbing ever greater depths of shamelessness. But now, there should be more than this or that group of ratepayers outraged. Raiding the state's bonds to prop up their shares makes everyone in California have to pay, not just that utility's customers. And it would compete with others seeking bonds to fund legitimate state interests, such as for infrastructure. Indeed, if this goes through, it could establish a legal principle that corporations are entitled to public money to maintain their profitability.— July 20, 2018 11:27 a.m.
San Diego's no-helmet scooter documents under wraps
What's perhaps more surprising is not that the city isn't releasing these docs, or claiming an obviously inapplicable exemption from [California law][1]—it's that they admit they even exist. Usually they play everything off by claiming there are [no responsive documents][2]. Are Kev-boy's handlers getting as sloppy as their ward? In any event, this is just more proof (if any needed) that the safety and welfare of San Diegans are always up for sale by our politicians if the price is right. Penasquitos Village empties of Filipinos
I'm not labeling you as a Nazi or other absolutist because I disagree with you. Your belief that you have the right to say who lives or dies does that. There is no way to "debate the value" of having other people suffer for no better reason than that it makes you feel smug about your own choices. But you do have thing separating you from the other absolutists: no ideology is more intellectually and morally vacuous than libertarianism.— July 20, 2018 10:27 a.m.
Penasquitos Village empties of Filipinos
When we agree [I will point that out][1], so when we don't I have to speak up. This post is callous, vile, and not a little racist. There are few things more tedious and self-serving than to claim that, if only people made the same life choices as you, they wouldn't suffer hardship. Of the many flaws with this argument, the most obvious is that if everyone were a technocrat or entrepreneur, there wouldn't be anyone to work in the restaurants, hospitals, shops, trades, or any of the thousand other little occupations necessary to enjoying your life as a master of the universe. Don't delude yourself into thinking you're better than a Nazi or jihadi or any other absolutist if you believe you have the right to decide who lives or dies. Convention Center expansion absurd
Seems like the people vote 'no' on these hybrid plans every time, only for the bigwigs to come back later with similar arguments and a "what about now?" In November 2016, it was [Prop C][2] and its mirror-image, [Prop D][2]. In June 2016, it was [Prop H][1]. In November 2010, it was another [Prop D][3]. Bottom line is, we can't borrow our way out of debt with bond measures. So either taxes have to be raised or, as too often been the case, services cut. Neither of these is desirable. But for damn sure, neither is defensible to pay for billionaire boondoggles dressed up as social services or infrastructure repair. And slightly off topic, but every time I see Kev-boy's official photo, he looks totally sloshed and smug that he's able to stay vertical. How high can Bankers Hill go?
Adding insult to [an old injury][1], what's really shameful is St. Paul's charade. For any other landowner, their property and its entitlements either sell or don't based on whether a buyer is interested. St. Paul's has a permit for 150 feet. So either Greystar can work with that or St. Paul's finds a buyer who can. But as "St. Paul’s has partnered with Greystar," that means it's retaining partial ownership and acting as a developer. Which makes the constant stream of speakers in clerical drag and appeals to spiritual benefit being used to dress up what is actually naked material interest genuinely indecent and cheap. This is just [another religious group][2] whose true denomination is what can be deposited in a bank. Faulconer vacation rentals voted down —UPDATED
Hear, hear! Now that they've voted down Kev-boy's *complete* giveaway, what will they approve? Any milquetoast measure will amount to the same thing, so it's key to keep the pressure on to ensure our representatives represent us.— July 16, 2018 9:30 p.m.
