Atkins garners horse money, DeMaio frets about gas tax repeal title
I'm not so stupid, peter45, that I believe the SB1 funding goes "to save the planet," rather than to road repairs and transportation only—and requires gas taxes already taken for the General Fund be repaid in full.**1** If you want gas taxes (and vehicle fees) to go for what they're supposed to, Prop. 6 will do the opposite. And if you want to know the main reason why we pay the most for gasoline in California, look no further than the thuggery of consolidation and price fixing by the oil and gas refinery industries. As much as 34% of the price per gallon goes to refinery costs and profits.**2** Perhaps it would help unconstipate your thinking to loosen the strap on your MAGA hat? **1**. https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavC… **2**. http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-gas-prices-…— October 10, 2018 5:01 p.m.
Atkins garners horse money, DeMaio frets about gas tax repeal title
Oh, boo hoo. DeMaio whining that the bogeymen are misrepresenting his initiative by saying exactly what it does rather than sound bite it per his personal spin. He should consider himself lucky Prop 6 isn't titled for what it's really about, the "PLEASE REPUBLICANS GET RILED UP ABOUT *SOMETHING* ON THE BALLOT AND GO VOTE SO WE DON'T LOSE EVERY ELECTED OFFICE THIS MIDTERM" measure.— October 10, 2018 2:30 p.m.
Check your drink
Clusters of these drugging attacks pop up every now and then all over the place. The gay community over the years has had more than its share of predators dosing drinks. And as the Cosby saga demonstrates, no place or situation should be considered "safe." Whether the motive is robbery or rape, the only thing more criminal is the indifference with which these attacks are met by authorities—just as described in this article. And also as described, the only solution is for the establishments where these attacks have or are likely to occur to band together to identify the perpetrators and protect themselves.— October 9, 2018 3:33 p.m.
Lakeside turns out
Once again, our elected officials can't seem to do the right things on their own, and have to be sued and lose in court. Here's vainly hoping the perpetrators of this sordid affair are ruined by their greed and dereliction of duty.— October 5, 2018 4:05 p.m.
Union-Tribune's chief photographer heads for the Times
No reason to think Soon-Shiong won't cannibalize the *Bee*s for the *L.A. Times* the same as he is doing to the *U-T*. Always had a love/hate relationship with the *U-T* due to its editorial positions, but still sad to see it kick the bucket like this. Looks like the *Reader* will be the only place left for reliable local in-depth reporting.— October 5, 2018 3:50 p.m.
The fate of Ofo bikes in San Diego
To quote someone who never needed an editor, "The lady doth protest too much." You were *paid* for your "work" on this book; and will get paid to do so for others *if* it is successful. Claiming how "proud" your are of your side gig to excuse a random advertising for your services is fatuous and equivalent to any other "work from home" scam poster.— October 4, 2018 7:50 p.m.
The fate of Ofo bikes in San Diego
The only thing missing from this gratuitous self-promotion is a link to Amazon to buy the book. By all means feel free to push this in your profile biography; but there's enough of a problem here in the comments section with spam sales pitches without you adding yours to it.— October 4, 2018 10:05 a.m.
The fate of Ofo bikes in San Diego
Unfortunately Dan, dwbat has nothing better to do with his dotage than hijack legitimate reader comments on *Reader* articles for no higher purpose than to direct attention to himself. But heaven forfend you point out that anyone as intelligent as he claims wouldn't be a needy troll on message boards: he will passive-aggressively dispute your future comments (see your posts on grass versus astroturf), and even those you made years back in time, because he thinks getting the last word means he wins. Either from pity or exhaustion, the real editors here can't seem to put a brake on his stunningly unprofessional and inane behavior, and can't see that his editorial pretensions and wink emoticons are nothing more than a smokescreen for denigrating other contributors.— October 3, 2018 1:36 p.m.
The fate of Ofo bikes in San Diego
As reported in the new book, *AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley and the New World Order*, "Data is the new oil, and China is the new Saudi Arabia." It tells why the Chinese could care less about the garbage left strewn here: the bikes (and scooters) were always a loss leader for the data harvested. They are collating complete profiles of everyone who has ever used one with personally identifiable data—not "anonymized" as at least formally required by tech companies in Western countries. In-filling with 130 houses in South Carlsbad
"[B]uild a retail commercial center on the three acres west of Ponto Road with Coast Highway frontage and an ocean view. On the east side of Ponto Road, up to 130 homes..." Looking at the map, it seems the PCH is the eastern boundary for this parcel, and Carlsbad Blvd the western. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ponto+Rd,+Carls…— October 2, 2018 11:04 a.m.
