Three Local Accountants Disciplined
The punishments appear to be a tad light, considering the fact the three may have committed crimes. Submitting false reports to a federal court has to be a crime. The punishments meted out to these three is a farce. I have no confidence in the CBA's ability to regulate its members and protect the public. I am certain the CPA profession hires lobbyists and buys politicians to shield its members from real accountability. All the crimes on Wall Street at some point require the connivance of CPAs. Enron, Peregrine, Madoff, the list is endless of crimes abetted by CPAs.— January 10, 2012 9:19 p.m.
Magazine Shows Stresses in L.A. Stadium Proposals
The sportswriters at the U-T appear to be putting in a lot of overtime with the knife and fork. Maybe Papa Doug should get rid of the candy and coke machines and put in a salad bar to help the poor bastards.— January 10, 2012 8:50 p.m.
The Rich Relationship of Sweetwater Union and Seville Group Inc.
It is possible that Cartmill and McCann did not take gratuities from the contractors in exchange for their vote. One would have to be an idiot to commit a felony in exchange for a few thousand dollars in free meals and tickets to sporting events. I believe that Dumanis would prosecute the Anglo board members if there was evidence against them. Cartmill and McCann are not well known. The Republican power elite could care less if Cartmill and McCann are prosecuted and would do nothing to help them. Neither of them are rising stars.— January 8, 2012 12:34 p.m.
Charges Filed Against Current and Former Sweetwater Union HS District Officials
I think there are many unresolved issues and the investigation needs to be expanded. The investigation should also focus on whether the construction work was performed by illegal aliens, and whether the contractors paid all required social security, medicare, disablity, and other employment taxes to the state. A large percentage of construction workers in San Diego are paid in cash under the table. When the state identifies under the table wage payments, the cases are supposed to be referred to Dumanis for prosecution. I don't think Dumanis is doing anything about this problem because she relies on contributions from the construction industry to fund her campaigns.— January 6, 2012 12:46 p.m.
Supreme Court Knocks Out Redevelopment Agencies
If the condos are empty, how do the taxpayers lose money? =================== The loan defaults from the speculators and others who mailed their keys back to the lenders cost the Federal Government/Federal Reserve almost $10 trillion. Remember, in order to keep the financial institutions from collapsing the Fed exchanged treasury bills for mortgage backed securities at face value. These mortgage backed securites were not worth 20 cents on the dollar when the exchange occurred and the Fed knew it. You can be certain the taxpayers took a big hit on the downtown condos. Everytime I hear the word "Ballpark" I want to vomit.— January 3, 2012 7:25 p.m.
Protesters Won't Leave Warner Springs Ranch
Some of the former denizens of the Warner Springs Ranch appear to be upset and apparently believe that they were financially scalped by the Indians.— January 2, 2012 7:27 p.m.
Convention Center Glut Billowing, Says Journal
I don't see Comic Con as ever leaving San Diego. The founders of Comic Con made the mistake of creating a tax exempt organization to run Comic Con when it was a small affair, thus cutting themselves out of millions in profits as the convention grew. It is my understanding that the founders/directors of Comic Con are individuals of modest means, who have middle class jobs in San Diego. They are also sharply constrained in their ability to pay themselves salaries due to Comic Con's tax exempt status and the fact that contractors do the heavy lifting. I don't think the founders are going to move Comic Con from San Diego. Such a move would disrupt their lives, perhaps force them to leave San Diego and find new jobs.— January 2, 2012 12:19 p.m.
County Can Afford Fords
I wonder why they need four-wheel drive vehicles. The Taurus is useless as an off-road vehicle even with four-wheel drive. The four-wheel drive option would only be useful for driving in snow.— January 1, 2012 1:11 p.m.
Convention Center Glut Billowing, Says Journal
San Diego is gaining a reputation among tourists as the place to avoid. YouTube is filled with videos showing young people on their knees in Pacific Beach vomiting on the street. Fisticuffs are common at night in the Gaslamp and Pacific beach bar and restaurant areas. When tourists walk the boardwalk in Pacific Beach they are confronted with the stench of marijuana and see tattoed thugs and gangbangers with shaved heads ready to rumble. When tourists drive in from Los Angeles and look for parking spaces in the beach areas, they find gangbangers standing in front of parking spaces with their hands out asking for a gratuity for saving the space, with the implied threat of violence if they don't pay up. The tourists with thick wallets are going elsewhere. San Diego only attracts drunks, four or five college kids who drive in from LA in one car to cruise bars. They rent a single cheap room at Motel 6 and spend next to nothing and cause enormous problems for the police.— January 1, 2012 11:23 a.m.
