UT, Orange County Register Will Join Forces, Says Lynch
I think Papa Doug and Lynch are in way over their heads.— May 9, 2012 5:53 p.m.
Will Wall Street Cool on Bridgepoint?
Community colleges are difficult for many students. JCs screen students for math and reading deficiencies, and force them to take remedial courses. Students are subjected to the notorious algebra word problems. Math is an insurmountable barrier for many. It's a lot easier and a lot less stressful to enroll in a for profit college where the requirements are less, especially if Uncle Sam is footing the bill. It is rational for veterans to enroll in for profit colleges under the current system even if they receive a worthless degree.— May 9, 2012 1:42 p.m.
Will Wall Street Cool on Bridgepoint?
I think Hunter supports for profit education because it is the only way many veterans can obtain admission to college and obtain benefits under the GI Bill. Most veterans could never hope to get into SDSU: the basic math concepts required for admission are beyond them. Veterans enroll in for profit education in droves because the GI Bill provides a living allowance of between $1,350 and $2,700 per month. Veterans want the living allowance, not the education. Veterans know the education is worthless and so does Hunter. Hunter is not a crook. He supports for profit education solely because it is the only way veterans can obtain the living allowance. Veterans should receive the living allowance as severance pay when the leave the service, without the requirement of having to enroll in college. The government would save billions per year.— May 9, 2012 11:55 a.m.
Edison Reports Increased Damage, Backs Off Restart Proposal at San Onofre
The US no longer has the technology to build nuclear reactors and has to rely on the Japanese for spare parts. Truly pathetic.— May 9, 2012 10:04 a.m.
First Look at Proposed U-T San Diego Video Billboard and News Ticker in Mission Valley
The sign is going to distract motorists and cause accidents on the freeway. In fact, every accident on the freeway in that vicinity will be blamed on the sign.— May 7, 2012 11:03 p.m.
City Notice Posted on Front Lawn Reveals Union-Tribune Seeking Condo, Office, and Retail Development Permits
Once Papa starts designing the project and applying for approvals, he can go to a lender and obtain a line of credit and borrow against the future value of the project. He could probably borrow $30 to $40 million upfront and use the money to keep himself afloat for another 2 or 3 years, if he needs to. By that time, he could probably convince a lender that the Grand Del Mar is worth more than his investment, and borrow $50 million more against the value of the Grand if he runs short. He could also borrow against the U-T if he can convince a lender the paper is worth more that he paid for it. He could also sell off participation in his contract to develop the Navy property if he needs cash. Papa is not going to run out of cash any time soon. You can be certain he's flush.— May 4, 2012 8:43 p.m.
Bridgepoint Reports Poor Earnings, Stock Plummets
The major problem is that veterans leave the military with few job skills and no way to support themselves as they transition to civilian life. So they enroll in diploma mill colleges not for an education, but merely to obtain GI Bill money to pay living expenses for a few years. The wife usually winds up sitting in front of the computer screen doing the course work to keep the money coming while the husband sits in front of the TV watching sports and drinking beer. The military should start offering transition assistance so that those who leave the military receive "severance pay" for a few years without having to enroll in a diploma mill.— May 4, 2012 7:17 p.m.

Blair disclosed in his April 1st column that San Diego was the sugar daddy capital of the world. Blair’s revelation must have roiled polite society and caused an uproar that has yet to subside. The sugar daddy column may have humiliated Papa because he dates young women so he castrated Blair from the U-T payroll. Papa Doug is not a man to be trifled with. His enmity is not to be taken lightly. This is all speculation nobody knows for sure— April 29, 2012 8:57 p.m.

When Karin Winner fired Neil Morgan, she told him "it was time to cut the chain." After Neil hired attorney Milt Silverman to represent him, it was time to cut the check.— April 29, 2012 8:56 p.m.
