Shames's Divorce, Computer Seizing Further Roil UCAN
It looks like Shames is going to receive a slug of money in settlement of a lawsuit filed against a rental car company. If Shames rented the car with UCAN's money while he was on the clock, then it appears that UCAN is entitled to any settlement.— October 2, 2012 10:56 p.m.
Lang Lang plays in San Diego
According to Wikipedia, Lang Lang has his critics: "Lang's performances have also been criticized. His performance style has been referred to as having "soggy rhythms and heavy phrasing", and as being "truly boring", "just bad" and "unendurable". Critics who feel that his playing is vulgar and lacks sensitivity have given him the nickname "Bang Bang". Pianist Earl Wild called him "the J. Lo of the piano."— October 1, 2012 11:31 p.m.
Border Patrol agent fired 10 rounds into vehicle after being hit
The Agent probably thought she was a suspect, so he stood in front of her car in an effort to detain her. She probably thought he was a kook or a carjacker, so she put the car in reverse to avoid hitting him and to get away. At that point the Agent probably went Rambo and jumped on the hood of the car like an idiot and grabbed the windshield wiper arms to steady himself. When the woman didn't immediately stop the car, he fired through the windshield in a panic. So now the Border Patrol is trying to spin the story by claiming the agent was hit by the car and fired only to save his life. If the Agent in fact jumped on the car, then he should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. This situation has a very bad odor.— September 30, 2012 8:58 p.m.
Mortgage of U-T's Lynch in Default
With grief like this on his credit report Lynch is going to have a hard time convincing HFC or Beneficial to loan him money to buy the LA Times.— September 29, 2012 12:41 a.m.
Group to Ask for Full Disclosure on San Onofre
What I think happened is that SCE did not want to purchase off the shelf generators from Babcock and Wilcox (B&W) or other vendors because of the high cost. So SCE hatched a scheme to use its own engineers to reverse engineer B&W generators at a much lower cost, all the while dunning the rate payers for full retail as if B&W generators had been installed. In other words, SCE wanted to pocket as profit the difference between the cost of the B&W generators and its lower cost internal design. SCE lacked the engineering talent needed to design the generators so the project fell apart. Now SCE is in a real jam. The generators are no damn good and can't be fixed. It's going to take B&W or another vendor 2-3 years to build replacements as generators are built to order with a long time lag between order and delivery. SCE has to figure out whether its cheaper to shut San Onofre down, or halt operations for 3 years while it waits for new generators. There is no doubt a gigantic struggle within SCE between the engineers who want to fix the reactor and the accountants who want to mitigate the impact of the shut down on the share price. This explains why the situation has the appearance of total chaos.— September 23, 2012 10:33 p.m.
"Zombie Apocalypse" on Mission Bay
I thought the blog was a joke when I read it, but other media are covering the story. There's really going to be a government-funded Zombie convention. Even after the GSA convention scandal! Look at the UTube Video below. You can't make this stuff up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3h9HcJ6ERXg&featur…!— September 18, 2012 10:21 p.m.
With Prop 30 tax hike battle looming, SDSU wants PR person to plant upbeat stories
The state budget crisis is a little long in the tooth to find PR staff still on the state payroll. All PR positions should have been cut three years ago when the bottom dropped out of state finances. It appears that there's still a lot of fat to be trimmed from the SDSU budget. The PR staff should be fired and the money diverted to educational purposes. After all SDSU is a university. Spending limited tax dollars on bloat like this is insane.— September 18, 2012 9:58 p.m.
"Zombie Apocalypse" on Mission Bay
It sounds like a gigantic boondoggle. Five days at $300 a day for food and lodging per person equals $15 million government dollars in total, not to mention travel costs. They might as well put the money in 50 gallon oil drums and light it on fire. There's certainly a lot of space for training at the resort. Absolute total waste of money. This is criminal and there should be an investigation.— September 18, 2012 9:39 p.m.
"Shadowy" conservative action group offers internship at University of San Diego
Shadowy is an apt description for an organization that refuses to disclose its source of funding.— September 18, 2012 8:10 p.m.
Lynch Says Stadium Won't Cost City a Dime
It looks like Lynch is projecting the new stadium will cost at least $700 million ($500 million which the city will borrow from the NFL and an additional $200 million from the County and or Port District). If the City allows Spanos to sell the Sports Arena and Qualcomm stadium sites to pay his share, then the cost of the new stadium could approach $1 billion. The retractable roof alone probably costs $100 million.— September 17, 2012 8:52 p.m.
