Group caught after taking Citibank for over $1 million
Since the perps made no attempt to disguise or conceal their identities, no crimes have been committed. This should be treated as a civil matter, not a criminal matter.— October 30, 2012 7:25 p.m.
Illinois teachers fund axes two SD money managers
The U-T reported in 2011 that Brandes takes $140 million per year in profits out of the company. This is disgusting and obscene. He appears to make most of his money off tax-deferred pension plans. If I ran Congress I would put Brandes and his ilk out of business fast. I would force all tax-deferred retirement plans, both public and private, to invest their funds solely in index funds and would permit the funds to charge an annual administration fee of only 1/10 of 1 percent of fund assets. The gravy train would end right there. Brandes is just profiting off the government's continuing efforts to bankrupt the country by jacking up the stock market with tax subsidies it can ill afford. Brandes is living proof that all wealth is created by the government.— October 29, 2012 9:40 p.m.
U-T sells North County Times Escondido site
The Classical Academy charter school is part of the Escondido Union High School District, which is broke. In 2009 the district borrowed $27 million using capital appreciation bonds. According to Will Carless, the $27 million bond will balloon to $247 million by the time the piper is paid. Now, the District wants to borrow $25 million more to build another gold-plated fantasy school on the North County Times site. The District will probably have to issue more capital appreciation bonds and defer interest and principal payments on the next generation, as the District is currently broke. The $25 million will probably swell to $250 million when the bill is paid. The school districts are deliberately attempting to bankrupt the state in an effort to force a massive tax increase upon taxpayers.— October 27, 2012 6:47 p.m.
Why SPAWAR and North Island fell for bribes
Gore wore out the knees in his pants to get to where he is. As FBI head in San Diego he halted the investigation that would have stopped the 9/11 hijackers in their tracks. He is a total incompetent and San Diego is the only city in the country where a clown with his record could win an election.— October 26, 2012 10:52 a.m.
Presidential candidate Mitt Romney roots deep and wide in San Diego
Carl DeMaio is a corn fed carpetbagger from Dubuque Iowa who came to San Diego to strip the city bare.— October 25, 2012 10:58 p.m.
Vista Apartment Dweller Did Not Go Easily
Suzuki just lost control of himself in the heat of the moment. He probably lost his job during the Bush financial collapse and couldn't find another one. His unemployment benefits gone, his savings exhausted, he probably just snapped. He should not have been arrested or charged with a crime. The Sheriffs should have hand cuffed him and held him an hour or so until he cooled down. Then he should have been released without charges. The DA is prosecuting way too many episodes like this. Suzuki's transgressions were mild, and he should not have been prosecuted. Filing felony charges in a case like this is just way over the top. Convicting him of four misdemeanors and one felony is insane.— October 25, 2012 7:11 p.m.
Former Jefferson staffer testifies she was told to falsify job numbers
Many successful lawyers have graduated from Jefferson. It’s possible to go far with a Jefferson law degree, but not very likely. Bonnie Dumanis is a Jefferson graduate. Most law students who attend schools like Jefferson believe that they are possessed of enormous talents, despite having mediocre undergraduate records and modest test scores. These students believe that they are exceptional, and are going to beat the odds. So they borrow on average $160,000 to pursue what is little more than sheer fantasy. I doubt many students enrolled in Jefferson based solely on false job placement figures. These students had to know what they were getting into, and the risks they were taking.— October 24, 2012 7:25 p.m.
Murdoch mulls buying LA Times, Chicago Tribune
I don't think Manchester has enough money to buy a large newspaper. He's reveling in the publicity and notoriety and has no intention of buying another paper. So is Lynch. Lynch said that when he was a radio exec Mayor Pudge Sanders would not return his phone calls. Now, Lynch claims Pudge has been to U-T headquarters to see him three times. In the spring Manchester is supposed to start construction on a $350 million 50-story hotel in Austin, Texas. He's also poised to start developing the U-T headquarters site in phases. He also has to start the Navy redevelopment project shortly. He is 70 years old. He is a fool to start so many projects at his age. It's not clear who will run his empire if he dies or becomes disabled, or whether this individual is capable of keeping the empire afloat. He should start cashing in and converting his real estate holdings to cash. He should unload the navy project on another developer. If built that white elephant is going to generate losses for ten or more years before reaching break even.— October 21, 2012 10:32 p.m.

Disbarred attorney back in jail again
