Mayor Filner accused of caving to "NIMBY" concerns. Stops construction on University Ave
All the storefront properties lining University Avenue and El Cajon Blvd. have been bought up by the economic cognoscenti (doctors, lawyers, corporate officials, etc.) , individuals with large incomes who spend every waking minute thinking of ways to accumulate and make money. These investors are going to tear those storefronts down, combine their properties, and line University Avenue and El Cajon Blvd. with high rise apartments and condos. Why do you think investors pay $1 million or more for a storefront property that rents for $1,000 per month, if it rents at all? Investors want the city to make University Avenue pedestrian and bicycle friendly to support increased density. Filner should terminate this project without delay.— December 23, 2012 6:54 p.m.
ResMed: Please refuse to play the subsidy game
According the latest 10-K, Resmed's worldwide effective tax rate ranges between 23% and 27% percent, depending upon the level of research spending in any given year. In the year ended June 30, 2012, Resmed earned $331,945,000 on $1.368 billion in sales, and paid only $77,095,000 in taxes. I don't think Resmed's tax burden is too large. I just don't see how corporate taxes can be cut any further. Yet business executives demand more. They want Congress to change the law so that corporations can repatriate earnings stashed in offshore tax havens free of tax.— December 20, 2012 8:32 p.m.
SD middle class vanishing
When dealing with statistics one has to watch out for outliers and outright liars.— December 15, 2012 11:31 p.m.
SD middle class vanishing
Paul Jacobs salary is upwards of $30 million per year. Is his salary included in the calculation of the average salary? Brandes earns $120 million per year. Is his compensation included in the average? If you subtract the outliers like Jacobs and Brandes from the calculations, I suspect the average salary is considerably below $40,000 per year, probably in the range of between $30,000 to $35,000 per year. A few heavy hitters like Jacobs and Brandes could add $15,000 or more to the average.— December 15, 2012 6:51 p.m.
Attorney attacked in court
The County is probably legally liable for the attorney's injuries. The prisoner should have been thoroughly searched before being permitted to enter the courtroom.— December 13, 2012 9:25 p.m.
Should Jack-in-the-Box stay in Mexican foods?
Qdoba is doing poorly because the food tastes like cardboard. There's virtually no cheese in the product. Customers don't want to eat Mexican food unless its loaded with fat and dripping with cheese.— December 13, 2012 8:40 p.m.
Corrupt business as usual?
Filner told the Voice of San Diego that marriage stinks, that his last wife took all his money and property. That's why Bronwyn should insist that she and Filner go to Vegas and get married, before he puts his pension papers in. If Filner activates his pension before the wedding Bronwyn may lack legal claims on his pension or entitlement to a survivors annuity. She's taking a risk marrying an elderly guy like Filner, financially and otherwise. If Filner's prostate goes out Viagara won't help him. http://m.voiceofsandiego.org/mobile/government/th…— December 7, 2012 12:37 a.m.
Corrupt business as usual?
I do hope that Bob will do the right thing and marry his Civil War Bride before he retires from Congress. With the 22 year age difference she's going to need a survivor's annuity. She'll be 68 when Bob's 90. If Bob goes at 75 she could easily collect on his government pension for another 25 years. Ray Lucia couldn't create a rate of return like that.— December 5, 2012 6:55 p.m.
Oceanside Code Enforcement Fines Homeowner
Amster was the guy hassling the motorcycle cop in front of his bagel joint. There's probably a connection between Amster's current predicament and his hassling of the cop. The Code Enforcement Officer's actions are probably totally within the law. The city probably would have let things slide had Amster not hassled the cop. If I was Amster I would mail the keys to the bank and walk away from the property. He's going to face $100,000 or more in legal fees if he tries to go ahead with the project. He's going to have to prove compliance with every mickey mouse rule and regulation in the code, and the city's going to claim that he's not complying no matter what he does.— December 1, 2012 1:12 p.m.
SDSU: crime abounds
Business Insider is owned by Henry Blodget. The SEC banned Blodget from the securities industry for life and fined him $4 million for fraud.— November 24, 2012 8:49 p.m.
