La Jolla billionaire to get the Neil Morgan award
They should name an aircraft carrier after Jacobs, or carve his face on Mt. Rushmore. A man of his accomplishments shouldn't have to settle for a newsroom.— January 25, 2013 7:16 p.m.
La Jolla oncologist pleads guilty to importing unapproved drug
Mabthera appears to be the same drug as Rituxan and is made by the same company. It appears that the drug was branded Mabthera in Europe for pricing reasons, so Americans won't ask why Rituxan costs more than Mabthera. I searched Mabthera on the internet and many Americans are buying the drug because it costs much less than Rituxan. I'm not convinced Bernstein is a crook. They should have indicted the drug company. Most drug companies have more salesmen on the payroll than researchers, and salesmen are paid more.— January 23, 2013 10:07 p.m.
Mickelson threatens to leave over taxes
California has a jock tax. No, the state doesn't tax a man based on the length of his pecker. At least not yet. But with Governor Brown facing a budget deficit of Rubirosa-like proportions, that may change. Filner has threatened to levy such a tax. However, California taxes athletes and performers on the income they earn in the state using a complicated formula. Even if Mick moves to Florida, he's still going to have to pay taxes on his California winnings. https://www.ftb.ca.gov/individuals/wsc/sports.sht…— January 22, 2013 7:56 p.m.
Vista man bloodied when arrested during under-aged party
That's an old trick. The officer tries to bend the suspect over the hot hood of a car. Not wanting to get burned by the hot hood, the suspect struggles. The officer then claims the suspect was resisting arrest and beats the hell of him. I'm not saying that this happened in this case. I don't know what happened in this case.— January 21, 2013 8:26 p.m.
Anschutz still wants foot in door
The wealthy are fighting like starving mongrels over the carcass of what was once the greatest economy the world had ever known. Anschutz apparently found that there's litte money to be made in sports facilities, even with the heavy government subsidies. Now Anschutz wants to use government muscle to force California ratepayers to subsidize his windmill empire and provide him with an "economic rate of return" on "his" investment because he can't find any other game in town. Anschutz is looking for another government handout.— January 21, 2013 9:01 a.m.
Economy 2013 "maddeningly slow"
Congress keeps the Work Opportunity Work Credit (WOTC) on a short leash and renews the WOTC for only a year or two at a time. The WOTC expired on 1/1/2013. Corporations that hire large numbers of unskilled workers are seized with a terrible panic when the WOTC expires and lobbyists immediately descend upon Congress with loads of campaign cash. After the campaign coffers are filled with corporate money, Congress deigns to extend the WOTC for another year or two. I think veterans would be a lot better off if Walmart paid the $560 million in taxes and Congress put the money in the VA's budget. http://www.larsonallen.com/Tax/Tax_Credit_for_Hir…— January 19, 2013 11:29 a.m.
Economy 2013 "maddeningly slow"
Veterans are considered disadvantaged for purposes of the Work Opportunity Tax Credit that retailers use to wipe out their federal taxes. If Walmart hires a veteran who has been unemployed six months or more, the company is entitled to a $5,600 tax credit. Do the math. Walmart is hiring veterans for tax bennies. Walmart creates economic conditions that prevent veterans from obtaining good paying jobs, and then receives a $560 million tax credit from the government for providing veterans with minimum wage jobs with no health insurance. You can't make this stuff up.— January 18, 2013 9:11 p.m.
San Diego’s Qualcomm is the fifth-largest user of H-1B talent
Don't forget Qualcomm is still under investigaion for violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act over accusations of overseas payoffs. With all the money Irwin Jacobs pumped into the presidential election, there's little likelihood that Qualcomm will be held accountable.— January 18, 2013 6:50 p.m.
Ryan Leaf in state prison
Maybe the Editors-In-God at the Union Tribune thought Leaf was going to be the next Jack Kemp. Leaf's going to wind up dead in an alley with a needle sticking out of his arm,— January 18, 2013 6:08 p.m.

Forbes says the Boeing Dreamliner has become the Nightmare Liner due to shoddy design and manufacturing by offshore contractors. The Dreamliner is a flying coffin and will bankrupt Boeing. http://www.forbes.com/sites/stevedenning/2013/01/…— January 17, 2013 7:58 p.m.
