Ryan Leaf could serve his Texas term in Montana
Papa Doug would be wise to watch Evel's video. There's a lot of wisdom for Papa there. Papa should go back to his wife and stop the tomfoolery before its too late. Papa's on the top loop of the roller coaster ride to hell.— July 7, 2013 7:17 a.m.
Ryan Leaf could serve his Texas term in Montana
Evel said he spread himself like horse manure in a field and had sex with 4,000 women. In a speech shortly before his death, he said he regretted cheating on his wife. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2FhaX1b08I— July 6, 2013 7:59 p.m.
John Moores getting heavily into horse racing
It might be an economic winner if the entrance to San Diego Bay is closed off and sealed from the ocean. Then, all the water could be pumped out of San Diego Bay creating a lot of new land for development. Either that or they could dust off that old plan to construct a canal between San Diego Bay and Mission Bay modeled after Venice, Italy.— July 6, 2013 1:52 p.m.
John Moores getting heavily into horse racing
There's no indication Moores is involved in doping. To the contrary, he went to Europe to find breeding stock with a drug-free gene pool. A man like Moores does not have to dope horses to win races. He can afford to buy the finest horses. The problem he faces is racing his horses against mediocre horses pumped up on dope.— July 4, 2013 3:24 p.m.
U.S. investigating $100,000 donation, Channel 10 says
I think the issue is that the City Council was prepared to transfer a valuable city asset to Sunroad gratis without any attempt to appraise the value of the asset. Filner could not skim the $100,000. The checks apparently were made out to the city. Filner could not walk into a bank and cash those checks. If Filner was a crook there are safer ways to take payoffs. He could have a charity hire his soon to be wife as a consultant and launder the payoffs as contributions to pay his wife's salary.— July 3, 2013 9:45 p.m.
Local lawyers disciplined
I have no doubt Lerach will get his license back, he raises millions for the Democrats.— July 3, 2013 7:02 p.m.
U.S. investigating $100,000 donation, Channel 10 says
The City has the legal right to sell or not sell an easement to a private developer. The city should have hired an appraiser to value the easement, and asked Sunroad to pay fair market value (probably well north of $1 million). Filner should not have been directly involved in the negotiations, except when it came time to vote on the deal. Filner got far too little. I don't think he ever intended to keep the money. The payment could never be kept secret. I don't see how this is extortion. That easement allowed Sunroad to cram more apartments on the lot. Sunroad's profit from the easement was far more than $100,000. Filner's trampling on the rules is not a crime.— July 3, 2013 4:41 p.m.
Local lawyers disciplined
Prison and disbarment probably added 15 years to Lerach's life. Even after prison and the disgrace of disbarment, he is still worth an estimated $900 million. In his case, crime paid.— July 3, 2013 2:44 p.m.
Is Austin, Texas emulating San Diego?
It appears that with CBD-CURE zoning Papa Doug can sell green cards to the Chinese investors for $1 million per card instead of $500k. If this is true, he made the $750,000 back on the first two green cards. This transaction is no different than Sunroad paying $100,000 for a city easement that may be designed to allow it to cram more apartments on the lot. The easement may have added $1 million or more to the value of Sunroad's lot. Sunroad paid a pittance. U-T San Diego has no standing to attack Filner on this issue when its owner is involved in similar transactions.— June 30, 2013 10:49 p.m.
Late David Copley's yacht sold
I read awhile back that shortly before his death Copley spent $400,000 to have the boat repainted. I imagine the operating costs for such a boat are at least $500,000 a year. The boat is little more than a monument to Copley's lifestyle of excess and gluttony that carved at least 20 years off his life expectancy. I wonder whether his mother ever tried to curb his excesses by threatening to cut him out of the will. Perhaps James Copley set it up so that David would inherit everything regardless of what his mother did so she had no control. In any event it appears that Helen Copley merely stood aside while David literally ate, drank, and smoked himself to death. He should have been confined to a mental institution for his own good, certainly by his early 20s. Dissipation is an ugly way to go.— June 29, 2013 12:13 p.m.
