Hitchcock star wins $1.5 million for San Diego accident
It's going to be pretty damned ugly for the power elite if Alvarez is elected Mayor. They spent all that money to destroy Filner and wound up with something worse. Alvarez is going to want living wages for hotel workers and maybe even rent control. Alvarez is not going to want to give the stadium construction contract to the white union workers with the $60,000 a year jobs. A lot of mid level white managers in city government are going to hit the glass ceiling as Alvarez diversifies the city workforce and appoints minorities and females to executive positions. It's going to be worse at SDPD. Hell will be upon the power elite if Alvarez wins.— December 19, 2013 9:25 a.m.
UCSD computer program to ID "urban tribe" members
Employers in California want to investigate job applicant's lifestyles before deciding whether to hire them. However, such investigations are illegal under California law. The urban tribe categories correspond with the types of individuals employers most want to avoid hiring. Belongie appears to be developing software that will enable employers to screen job applicants and avoid hiring undesirables. For example, country music lover equates to drunk white trash. Hipster or Goth equates to drug addict. Belongie at some point will try to sell his technology for a huge profit. It's all about money, not technology.— December 19, 2013 9:11 a.m.
Hitchcock star wins $1.5 million for San Diego accident
It's possible that the delayed effect of Hitchcock's tremendous girth is partly responsible for the back problems and headaches.— December 17, 2013 9:32 p.m.
Paul Jacobs out — Steve Mollenkopf in as Qualcomm's new CEO
I just never believed that Paul Jacobs was calling the shots. He was probably just a straw boss at Qualcomm. I think the Jacobs family owns less than 4% of Qualcomm's stock and there may be no Jacobs working for the company in a few years.— December 13, 2013 4:34 p.m.
Tom Gildred gets Entrepreneur of the Year award, but was he the innovator?
I think Park probably violated the noncompete provision in his employment agreement and he and Emerald are going to be hit with a big judgment. It's not clear if Emerald can pay the judgment. I think Gildred and Park may have to "sell" Emerald to Angelica to get out of this mess. Gildred and Park may wind up with a million or two for their efforts. This is just my conjecture.— December 13, 2013 2:04 p.m.
Paul Jacobs out — Steve Mollenkopf in as Qualcomm's new CEO
Mollenkopf has probably been running the company for many years. Maybe Nate Fletcher is going to pick up Mollenkopf's laundry and get his car gassed and washed like he did for Paul. Paul didn't have time to wait in line at Costco to gas his car as the line is always at least 10 cars long. So he sent Nate there to get the car gassed and to pick up his Combo pizza.— December 13, 2013 1:51 p.m.
Jefferson law school's dean admits school's errors
The TJ building project was listed on the CCDC website at one time as a taxpayer subsidized project.— December 13, 2013 1:41 p.m.
City to pay illegally detained San Diego couple $450K
The City still has to pay Filner's accusers off. The City's going to run out of dough at the rate these lawsuits are being paid off. Also, the City took a $30 million hit to the gonads when Jan (Smitty) Goldsmith forgot to tell the insurance company about the sewer gas lawsuit. Smitty claimed the sewer gas was caused by condo owners eating too much Mexican food and said the City was not liable.— December 13, 2013 12:27 a.m.
Tom Gildred gets Entrepreneur of the Year award, but was he the innovator?
It looks like Angelica had a monopoly in the hospital segment of the laundry market and did not see any competitors on the horizon who were willing to invest the money needed to compete with it. So Angelica wrung every dollar it could out of the San Diego operation, investing as little as possible in capital improvements and repairs. Angelica likely did not care how much water or gas was wasted: it merely passed the costs on to the hospitals with a mark up for profit. I think starting Emerald was a good idea, no matter who gets the credit.— December 12, 2013 9:51 p.m.
Fed shovels money to Wall Street, not Main Street
The reason why the U.S. economy is bad is because manufacturing has gone offshore. The reason why 60,000 former Marines in San Diego County have disability claims pending with the VA, although most never saw combat or were not injured in combat, is because they cannot find jobs in manufacturing and there are no other jobs for them. If they are going to be unemployed they might as well be unemployed living on disability in San Diego rather than Ohio. The collapse of manufacturing is bankrupting America because imported products cost the government far more in lost tax revenue and social service costs than such products save the consumer in lower prices.— December 7, 2013 11:56 a.m.
