Bikers gather to pay tribute to one of their own
The "accident" occurred at 7 pm. It was dark. The pedestrians had a clear view of the road in both directions for at least 1/2 mile. Go to Google street view and see for yourself. There is no way they could not have seen the headlights of an approaching motorcycle at night. It may well be that the DA thought it would take too much effort to file charges, so the CHP "wrote out" of the investigation by labeling it a "tragic accident". The DA does not want complicated cases that take a lot of effort to prove, particularly if the accused have the money to hire good lawyers. I would like to know if the pedestrians were drinking, and if they were even tested for alcohol.— February 9, 2014 11:07 p.m.
Political advocacy group tied to Koch Brothers targets Scott Peters
Scott Peters is lucky his wife Lynn Gorguze is worth $44 million, maybe more now that her father died. Peters won't have to worry about losing his health insurance if DeMaio boots him out of office. The amount of money the Koch brothers are spending on behalf of DeMaio is paltry. Perhaps the brothers don't think he has much of a chance.— February 7, 2014 3:35 p.m.
Lawyer cusses out judge, gets suspended
The story was covered by many newspapers, including the LA Times, in a humorous way. I remember almost everything I read. Sometimes my recollection is not accurate or clouded by age. I can't remember what I did yesterday, but I remember what I read 30 years ago. I've read Microfilm of every edition of the San Diego Union, San Diego Sun etc. dating back to the founding of the paper. I also read Ken Harrison's Louis Rose society website, if he's that Ken.— February 7, 2014 11:18 a.m.
Following disappointing year, management shakeup at U-T coming
The odds are against the paper's recovery. About the only advertiser left from 30 or 40 years ago is Big 5 Sports, which continues to run multi-page ads. The porno movie houses used to place large ads in the paper but they were put out of business by video. Tire dealers used to take out huge ads in the sports section every week. Tire advertising is now on-line. Banks used to take out large ads advertising CD rates. That business disappeared. The Thrifty Ads are gone, replaced by Craigslist. The used car ads are gone, replaced by Craigslist. Most of the Department Stores that purchased huge ads each week have gone out of business. The grocery store chains are being squeezed by Walmart and cut back on advertising. I just don't see any hope for the paper. The paper could not make a profit even if all the employees worked for free.— February 7, 2014 9:56 a.m.
Klein, Morgan U-T departures, considered together
I don't use the Reader search function. It does not work very well if at all. Many things do not appear in the Reader search. When I want to search the Reader, I search Google using the following search terms: Copley zobell site:sandiegoreader.com— February 7, 2014 8:59 a.m.
Klein, Morgan U-T departures, considered together
Here's your story about ZoBell. It appears that ZoBell worked for Copley Press until at least 2007. Since Morgan was fired in 2004, there's no connection with ZoBell. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/financial-c…— February 6, 2014 11:29 p.m.
Lawyer cusses out judge, gets suspended
Now that the state bar has ruled that the phrase "Fork You" is constitutionally protected, all lawyers should feel free to use the phrase in their interactions with judges in courtrooms. Pretty much like Don did in Judge Gilliam's courtroom when he gasped and said "bull sheet" during Nancy Hoover's questioning. His comment was constitutionally protected.— February 6, 2014 9:27 p.m.
Klein, Morgan U-T departures, considered together
I wonder if there's any relationship between Morgan's firing and the end of Karl ZoBell's involvement with the Copley Press.— February 6, 2014 8:03 p.m.
Lawyer cusses out judge, gets suspended
I hope Iwo comes on this blog and explains why he does not like Judge Taylor. There are two sides to every story and Iwo should welcome the opportunity to tell his side. Iwo, are you there? Please explain your actions.— February 6, 2014 7:41 p.m.
Michael Shames owes more than $100,000
It looks like Shames destroyed himself in his quest to destroy UCAN. He all but made himself the target of what may turn out to be a criminal indictment. None of his actions make any sense. His decision to file a libel suit he obviously could not win raises questions about his judgment. Even if he won his libel suit it's doubtful Peffer could pay. Shames is on the path to self-destruction. This situation is just bizarre and the game plan isn't clear.— February 6, 2014 7:26 p.m.
