Civil breakdown at Trump appearance
Did you miss the fact those were the left's crazies inciting violence?— May 28, 2016 12:37 p.m.
Thank Dave (Stutz) for disorganizing local crime
Don: I still remember who pointed out the headline for me (he's now a financial editor at Bloomberg News). I was a 23-tear-old cub reporter working out of the courthouse pressroom (next to Bill Ott and Mike Conan) during Smith's state trial. My head about exploded trying to keep up with the often tedious financial talk in those proceedings. I was always happy when I woke up the next morning, opened the Union and saw that Bill Ott's account of the trial agreed with mine. It's hard to imagine our current DA taking on financial cases on the scale of what we saw back then. Can you imagine them actually doing an in-depth investigation of a local company operating on the scale that Smith did in his day? RIP Dave Stutz.— May 16, 2016 4:36 p.m.
San Diego's welfare plan for hotel owners
"tackling the homeless problem — would probably attract more tourists" Or at least scare fewer from returning to SD.— April 27, 2016 8:03 a.m.
Mission Beach land-use ordinance kicked in the teeth
"there were t-shirts made...all to no avail." Funny how t-shirts are seldom the deciding factor in legal disputes.— April 21, 2016 8:07 a.m.
Another day, another Otay Mesa drug tunnel
Who says San Diego doesn't have a subway system?— April 21, 2016 7:21 a.m.
Mission Beach land-use ordinance kicked in the teeth
"The absence of community parks in Mission Beach has always been a touchy subject for residents...city planners and others don’t factor in the beach and bay areas due to high use by tourists." What a bunch of nonsense that is: they live in a park, all of them. With that logic many communities could complain that their existing parks should not be counted because of high use by the homelessor gangs. I don't understand why the supposedly "progressive" San Diego City Council doesn't act very progressive in such land use decisions (well, actually I do understand: it's campaign money and the influence that buys), but pretending a development is not a few steps from a 4,600 acres park is a bit of a shell game.— April 20, 2016 8:35 a.m.
Google Express delivers a dud
At Amazon (and Apple) you are the customer. At Google you are the product and the advertisers are the customers. Google has not grasped how to treat individuals as customers.— April 17, 2016 3:46 p.m.
Firemen’s empire
Sounds like the unions have their panties in a bunch.— February 9, 2016 6:51 p.m.
Fortress with a view
If you want to visit a coastal battery no need to go to Marin - Fort MacArthur on the top of the hill in San Pedro is home of a very active museum that is open year round and which, in the summer, has Fort MacArthur Days which brings all sorts of military history reenactors to the site.— February 9, 2016 2:54 p.m.
Is the farm-to-table movement over?
The first thing they should to is question "Of all the labels people look for when it comes to food, locally grown is number one, surveys find." Did they just survey 12 hipsters in North Park? Of the people I know, the most important label is the price tag. They also know that labels such as "organic" and "locally grown" usually result in a higher price tag. Another question: are local growers having such a hard time selling their product that they need a poorly-designed gimmick label to move it? The farmers have shown they don't care about this pay-to-play label, so why should consumers?— February 7, 2016 10:31 a.m.
