PechaKucha: Where You Have 6 Minutes + 40 Seconds to Explain Yourself
@Sara, thank you! The next PechaKucha event is NEXT THURSDAY at Quality Social downtown. I'll be on NBC/KNSD News in the Morning tomorrow at 6:45 a.m. to discuss this piece and offer a taste of what it's like!
— January 12, 2011 5:47 p.m.
Itty-Bitty Committee
p.s. The next column (out today) has nothing to do with children. Apparently, two in a row was way overwhelming for people. If you look back over the past few months, you'll see the variety of things I've written about, from attending the Rally to Restore Sanity, to basking in the glory of an awesome 90-year-old, traveling the bay of San Diego with my father, going to the San Diego Zoo, going sailing in Mission Bay. You can't please everyone, but really, I think I'm covering a wide variety of interests, just from one local woman's point of view.

Itty-Bitty Committee
I'm sure if you all read carefully, you'll see these aren't "child-hating stories." The last one was about my sister and her over-planning skills, and this one was about a misunderstanding, a party that was expected to be one way, but comically turned out to be another. Just as it would not be appropriate to take children to a bar, I don't think it's appropriate to have them at an "adult" party. @TheJeep, this is a slice-of-life entertainment column. The Reader has other writers who cover the topics you mention. I understand there are many who enjoy having kids and get a great deal of satisfaction from raising children. I'm not trying to suggest the child-free way is superior, I'm just saying it's MY preference. I wish that happy parents could likewise understand that it's possible for the child-free to also be happy and fulfilled.

Happy Pill
Mindy, that's terrible, I'm sorry to hear it. I used to freak out in the dentist's chair, even for a cleaning. At first, mild sedation worked, and then, over time and several "not traumatic" cleanings, I was finally able to go without the sedation. Good luck, panic attacks are no fun. Regarding the medical establishment, as with anything, people are people - some are smart, others dumb; some are helpful, others harmful. It's important to go with someone you trust.

Happy Pill
Thanks for asking, Blue! It goes very well. Better than ever. The pill was clearly the way to go for me. :)

Bohemian, no way! It's totally comfy. ;) And David has no problem with the sweatshirt (I wore it to the Rally to Restore Sanity), he just thinks the entire outfit (top and bottom together) is too casual to go out in, more pajamas than dinner-wear. In that regard, I actually agree with him. He's always got my best interest in mind.
— November 12, 2010 8:55 a.m.
Fashion Police
Dear Zuzzette, from your comments it is clear to me that you do not know David. This love of my life couldn't possibly be more attentive and caring. If he wonders when I'm going to be home, it's not because he's controlling, but because he's trying to plan out the time it takes to bake me something special or arrange the house to my liking for when I rejoin him. In fact, it's ridiculous how much the man serves me in every way imaginable. Your anger is misdirected.

No Photos!
Re: #11 Thank you for writing to explain where you were coming from, and you ARE young. You were definitely nice, you both were. It's the whole concept of "no photos" when people are in a public place that I was frustrated with that day (and many other days). I understand, as Kevin in #13 mentions that this may have been a lesson, but staging it in the middle of a very publicized public glass show is not the best way to avoid onlookers. @MdlMkr, I would love to learn how to work with molten glass. If I burned myself in the process, it would make for an even funnier and more interesting follow-up column. ;)
— October 22, 2010 10:16 a.m.

Jeep, that's certainly the best way to go about it "inside" a store or studio. But "outside," at a public event, whether someone is taking photos or video for their own personal use or for reporting, they do not have to explain themselves or ask permission. People have an inaccurate assumption of privacy. If I can see it from a public place, I'm allowed to photograph it, according to the law. If people want to protect themselves or their work from being photographed, they must take precautions (such as not attending or participating in public events). You must assume that whatever you do or say in public may be recorded. On that note, I should get some blinds in my place. If I can see those guys on the street, they can probably see me! ;)
— October 21, 2010 9:55 a.m.
No Photos!
Not sure how it is in Mexico, refried, but here, it's legal to take photos of anything or anybody in public places. The few exceptions include using a person's image to sell something without their permission. Photos of items on tables at farmers markets and shows like this? Totally permissible. They have no reason to expect cash, nor do they have authority to tell someone to turn off their camera.

PechaKucha: Where You Have 6 Minutes + 40 Seconds to Explain Yourself
@Sara, thank you! The next PechaKucha event is NEXT THURSDAY at Quality Social downtown. I'll be on NBC/KNSD News in the Morning tomorrow at 6:45 a.m. to discuss this piece and offer a taste of what it's like!— January 12, 2011 5:47 p.m.
You can't please everyone, but really, I think I'm covering a wide variety of interests, just from one local woman's point of view.— December 29, 2010 11:37 a.m.
I wish that happy parents could likewise understand that it's possible for the child-free to also be happy and fulfilled.— December 29, 2010 11:32 a.m.
It's important to go with someone you trust.— November 21, 2010 7:33 a.m.
Happy Pill
Thanks for asking, Blue! It goes very well. Better than ever. The pill was clearly the way to go for me. :)— November 19, 2010 1:05 p.m.

He's always got my best interest in mind.— November 12, 2010 8:55 a.m.

Your anger is misdirected.— November 11, 2010 5:18 p.m.
If I burned myself in the process, it would make for an even funnier and more interesting follow-up column. ;)— October 22, 2010 10:16 a.m.

If I can see those guys on the street, they can probably see me! ;)— October 21, 2010 9:55 a.m.

Not sure how it is in Mexico, refried, but here, it's legal to take photos of anything or anybody in public places. The few exceptions include using a person's image to sell something without their permission. Photos of items on tables at farmers markets and shows like this? Totally permissible. They have no reason to expect cash, nor do they have authority to tell someone to turn off their camera.— October 20, 2010 5:11 p.m.
