In which Pike, in a stroke of Genius, attempts to reconcile Linguistics, Biology, History, and Math in one Swell Foop
My mother once gave me a cartoon of a Hamlet scene but the caption said "Hamlet in Ebonics." Here is the quote on the cartoon: I be, or I don't be. Dat's what's up. Anyway. I really want to join in this dance of linguistics and etymology and how it has all progressed but, well, after reading this blog, my brain has vomited and refuses to let go of the toilet. So I'll just say that I mentioned it in a comment on another blog that the English language has gone places that makes me question reality sometimes. Interesting blog, especially from a freakin' hot water heater ad. You know, just typing it makes me see the redundancy... kinda like sanitary sewer.— October 21, 2009 8:48 p.m.

That, too. So... maybe it's just that it's late but... would an ampersand be a symbol going under amper? Just curious. And not to pick on the only language I know the most but the English language seems to get more and more ridiculous as I get older. Why does there have to be a word for everything?! Analysand? Really? Is saying "a person undergoing analysis" really too much that it warrants just one word? Have we become too lazy to say three extra words? Not to go even more off tangent but I blame cell phones and texting 4 y i feel this wa- dammit!— October 20, 2009 2:13 a.m.

Yes, Pete. It's breaking down the beach into more understandable reasons for itself. Or something.— October 20, 2009 2:01 a.m.

Ah, ok. I stand corrected on the actual "study" being listed. Thanks for pointing that out. I went to this Virgil's website and while I may not have found anything on there that stood out enough to make me want to hunt this guy down, I still got a gross vibe from his page. He just seemed like a pretty annoying person. Maybe he's a ridiculously nice guy. Who knows? But this "study" he did... sorry, it's pretty stupid in itself. I'd really like to see Virgil's album collection. I think what's so bothersome is that for some reason, this "study" just gnaws away at me and I don't know why. It's one of those ideas someone comes up with while drunk at a party but never follows through with. Except this d-bag actually did. And for some reason, it really bothers me... ha. Sigh....— October 20, 2009 12:48 a.m.

Now I want to go as an evil swan for Halloween. I think those couch thingies are a little silly, if not only half useful. I mean, what if you're the guy that has to sit on the end with no back? Might as well pop a squat on the floor, if that's the case. But I dig your storyline. I'm thinking you should write a story with every ad you deem worthy of a blog. Hell, just make up your own history for the item.— October 20, 2009 12:25 a.m.

I will completely agree that this type of story is blog-worthy. However, I want to point out that whoever wrote the story back in Michigan is far from a journalist, especially one who deserves to have a job after this mess. First, the story is about an "unscientific" study. Ok, stop right there because I can't see past all the red flags. And that word was in the actual title of the article. Once I saw that the article immediately lost all credibility. Second, I wish people would quit associating intelligence with music listened to. No, Judas Priest is not to blame for that dumbass that committed suicide. Also, Paul is NOT dead. Look, the world is full of either idiots or geniuses. To determine who is who by what music they listen to is as bad as stereotyping races. And that's all this article seems to enforce. Third, the article never mentioned or even gave any links to the study itself. How many participants were there? Who funded it? What was the original thesis? Were there any age factors included? And the biggest question of all... why? The editor of MLive needs to be fired. Or at least give everyone an apology for feeling this was an article worthy of publishing. Oh, and to use Thom Yorke in the article's picture was a gross mistake. Think what you want of Radiohead but you'll be hard-pressed to find lyrics and music as intricate and meaningful. Yeah, the guy looks creepy but so does Stephen Hawkin. Are we going to start making fun of him, too?— October 20, 2009 12:15 a.m.

Driving Me Crazy
I'm no car mechanic but if your alternator went out and your car is 12 years old, I would expect more and more money to start pouring out of your pocket (which, by the way, I think sucks because they have the technology for better gas mileage and longer lasting cars). As for the rude people, not sure what to say to that. I try to think of them as pregnant and going into delivery so they're in a hurry, or maybe they deliver pizzas and it's a busy night (no, that wasn't me yelling at you today). But when this happened to me many years ago, I just started smiling and waving to all the people that swore and honked at me. It really made the situation a little more lighter. At least it did for me.— October 19, 2009 11:20 p.m.
