The Spot
1005 Prospect Street, San Diego, CA 92037
The Spot operates in a building that, in 1915, was called the White Rabbit Roof Garden, one of the original buildings of this town. And then, from 1919, it was the Country Cupboard. In 1978, Jerry Herman came out from Evanston, Illinois with the name of his old place, the Spot, which would become the oldest continuously-operating restaurant in La Jolla.
Herman passed away in 2010 at the age of 77, but the Spot still offers classic pub grub and drinks, served late in a casual tavern atmosphere, with a fireplace. Heavily varnished vertical timbers line the upper walls, a beautiful bar counter looks like it was ripped from some sailing ship, and a model of a rake-masted ketch nails the whole impression.
