Monkey Paw (Permanently Closed)
805 16th Street, San Diego, CA 92101
The brainchild of Scot Blair, one of San Diego’s most popular beer bar barons, this venue falls in line with his others (Hamilton’s Tavern, Small Bar) in its low-frills, dive feel. Unapologetically greasy bar fare including cheesesteak sandwiches and sloppy “stoner fries” flow in tandem with jukebox tunes and house beers that celebrate more obscure styles and employ inventive spins on ubiquitous styles. Service is better and the volume is much lower during the daytime, as night sometimes brings on crowds exceeding available seating and noise exceeding the level where one can carry on a conversation.
