Located in a nondescript Serra Mesa strip mall, this tiny sushi bar and restaurant is the brainchild of L.A.-transplant chef Akio Ishito. Omakase menus require a three-day advance reservation but are well worth it. Chef Ishito’s menus weave in and out of the nooks and crannies of Japanese cuisine, intermingling tasteful hot dishes with expert sushi preparation. Ordering à la carte gives diners the chance to delve into less-common dishes such as mackerel-pressed sushi, salted, sliced chicken thigh, or delicately fried burdock root. Opponents of ostentatious decor will appreciate the restaurant’s reserved style, while fans of gastronomic exploration can take pride in having sourced a meal off the beaten path.
