East Village Asian Diner
A successful North County California Korean Japanese bistro expanded to Uptown, East Village specializes in bibimbap, the Korean specialty of rice, vegetables, and meat served in a hot stone bowl. The idea is sound, but, since the restaurant opened, Hillcrest bibimbap fans may be better served by a trip to the Ranch 99 food court, since East Village pooches the design a bit, overdoing it with toppings and poorly textured rice. East Village also jumps into the dark water of fusion burritos, trying out a Korean burrito filled with beef and kimchi. It's a worthy gamble, but Asian fusion just doesn't seem to work with burritos. If East Village ups its game, it'll be a worthy joint, but there's so many Asian-style restaurants in Hillcrest that this one will have to kick game better than what it does now to stand out.
