Probably Gaslamp, it's a tough call between it and La Jolla, what with the ocean and all. But the Gaslamp is a little more dense so you can walk around and see more stuff in a smaller area.

If the category of breweries is out, so I can't take him on a tour I'd pick Mission Brewery as the best. Cute bartenders, the beer is awesome, great customer service, and the beer gets you drunk.

I would take this hypothetical friend to the Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park. It has some of the best plays in the united states, possibly in the world, and it gives you a chance to see plays no one else has seen.

Balboa Park, it is the most beautiful place in San Diego. I've lived here all my life and I'm still finding new things there.
