Sean Timothy Calleran
San Diego, CA
June 24, 1961 - January 3, 2025
CALLERAN, Sean Timothy, (63) passed away January 3, 2025, in San Diego, CA. A longtime resident of San Diego, Sean was born on June 24, 1961, in Norfolk, VA. In 1972 his family moved to Harrisonburg, VA, where he graduated from Harrisonburg High School. Sean went on to attend James Madison University, taking 1st place in the Environmental Art Competition, and graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
He was preceded in death by his older brother, Jim (Jr.), and is survived by his beloved wife, Susan, and their two sons, Sean Timothy, Jr.(“Jack”), and Luke Gregory. He is also survived by his parents, James E., Jr and Saundra S. Calleran of Richmond, VA, as well as siblings: Mark H. Calleran (Michelle) of San Diego, and S. Michael Calleran, (Laura) of Manakin-Sabot, VA; Margaret C. Clark of Harrisonburg, VA, and Carrie C. Rosenblatt (Charles) of Richmond, VA; and, his numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Part-time restaurant jobs in high school and college, launched Sean’s four decade career in culinary services, working in positions from line cook to Sous Chef at fine dining restaurants, from The Chart House in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, to Croce’s in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter.
As his and Susan’s sons came along, Sean sought a more balanced work-life schedule, transitioning to institutional and corporate dining services. He held leadership roles with contractors at companies such as Raytheon and Qualcomm, before joining Sodexo Corporation. As a Lead Cook, Sean helped open the dining services at Sharp Hospital in Chula Vista, and later served as Production Manager at Mess Hall 569 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, the largest mess hall in the Corps. Proving to be a dedicated leader, Sean was promoted to General Manager of Mess Hall 620, also at MCRD.
His professional career aside, Sean’s greatest joy was his family. He cherished every moment with Susan and their two sons, Jack and Luke. He was happiest spending time with the boys in visits to the zoo, days at the beach, and walks along San Diego’s many trails, even to the Dishwasher Pond to catch and release Crawdads.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Arrangements are in the planning stages but will be private.
