Kenneth Wayne Kuhlken passed peacefully on July 29th, 2024. Born September 4th, 1945 to Ada Gene Kuhlken and Charles Wayne Kuhlken, he grew up in La Mesa, and after graduating from Helix High School, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa. He went on to publish over 20 novels and articles for various publications. Ken also taught creative writing at several colleges, including Chico State University, the University of Arizona, and the University of San Diego. Amongst other accomplishments, he founded and served as president of Perelandra College, an online university focused on “understanding . . . the wisdom of Christ and the works of writers inspired by his wisdom.” Ken saw the college as a way to advocate “for literacy, honesty, beauty, and truth.” He was an avid golfer and supporter of children’s sports, coaching little league baseball and softball. Ken is survived by his three children–Darcy Mentone, Cody Kuhlken, and Zoe Kuhlken–his grandson, Nicholas Mentone, and his great grandson, Cassius Mentone.
