James went home to the Lord at the age of 69 after fighting a short battle with an aggressive cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends in his last hours at Sharp Memorial Hospital. He was born in Sandwich, Illinois, to James B. Riis and Mary Reingard. He was the eldest of 7 children: brother, Dale, and 5 sisters, Bonnie, Mary, Loretta, Julie, and Barbara. He served in the United States Army in the late 60's during the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge, he moved to the West Coast, settling in San Diego, where he attended college and became a master of many crafts. He is survived by his wife, Therese, and their 3 children: Tatiana Marie, Allison Elizabeth, and Jacob Bernard Riis. The celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017, 11:00am, at Blessed Sacrament Church, 4540 El Cerrito Drive, San Diego.
