Family and friends are mourning the loss of the beautiful Caren Louise Novick who died on Sunday, Jan. 29 of metastatic melanoma. Caren was born to David and Carol Novick in Sacramento, Ca. The family moved to Coronado in 1972 where Caren attended Sacred Heart School. Caren was a competitive CNSA swimmer starting in the 5th grade and she continued in the sport through her graduation from Coronado High School. Caren’s airline pilot father and flight attendant mother passed a love of travel on to their daughter. As a family, they explored the world together and Caren’s favorite places included Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Paris, Colorado, and Hawaii. With all of the exotic locations she had been, Caren’s list of favorites was never complete without Coronado and its gorgeous beach. After high school, Caren spent a year in Australia before returning to San Diego to pursue her bachelor’s degree in Journalism with an emphasis in Public Relations from San Diego State University. While at SDSU, Caren once again traveled, studying for a semester in France. Caren continued her education obtaining Masters degrees in both Business and Education and spent part of her career working for the Coronado Hospital Foundation in public relations. Ultimately, Caren took her loving and encouraging spirit into the classroom to serve traumatized and disadvantaged students through her work as a teacher in San Diego County Court schools where she worked for the remainder of her professional career. Anyone who had a conversation with Caren about her students could hear the compassion and pride in her voice when she spoke of them. The positive impact that Caren had on many students’ lives is a lasting legacy. Remembering Caren means remembering her wicked sense of humor, her infectious laugh and her giving nature. Caren didn’t just make friends; she became an integral part of each family she connected to. She was the master and organizer of entertainment. Caren could bring a room to life with her love of fun, and her conviction that everybody could use a little “bling.” Caren knew the importance of friendships and spent many happy weekends with girlfriends from high school traveling to locations like Cancun, Catalina, Hawaii, and Puerto Vallarta. Though the destinations were enviable, it was the shared joy of friendship that mattered the most on these trips. Caren is survived by her loving mother, Carol, and family members in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Arizona. Her family would like to thank the team of doctors from Sharp Hospital Coronado and the exceptional staff at the Coronado Villa for their outstanding care.
