Karen Louise Hashberger passed away on January 23, 2017, in her beautiful San Marcos home with her son, daughter-in-law and dog beside her, after a brief battle with cancer at the age 62. Karen was born on May 22, 1954, to Frank Diederich and Georgia (Mazarakos) Diederich in Chicago, IL, as their only child. She grew up in the serene neighborhood of Edgebrook surrounded by forest and rivers. After graduating from Chicago's Shriner College, Karen moved to sunny San Diego. She soon met Roy Bryan Hashberger and they were married at Ramona's Dos Picos park on August 10, 1986 by Wayne Keagy. Karen gave birth to her only child, Michael, on March 21, 1990. Karen worked in many different fields to support her family including a 15-year tenure selling insurance with Geico. She was a prolific pianist and spent countless hours teaching children to play and filling her home with music. Her favorite hobbies included acquiring, refurbishing, researching and selling antiques, along with painting, reading, table games and playing with her dog, Rocky. Karen's amazing attributes can hardly be summarized on paper but one of her most distinguishing qualities was being an absolute loving mother. Not just to her son but, to all children who came to into her life through sports, scouts and friendships. Karen's ability to make anyone who came into her home feel welcomed, loved and cared for will never be surpassed. Karen is survived by her son, Michael; and stepdaughter, Heidi; along with numerous loving cousins. Karen's memory and incalculable impact is not only carried by relatives but by the multitude of friends she, Roy and Michael made over their lifetime as a family.
