This week, besides the massive Border 2 Fire, there have been other odd fires reported throughout the county and Tijuana, including one that was ignited by a crashed Tesla, another by a nesting osprey, and an alleged arsonist who Mission Valley locals saw and called the police on, and another one across the border where an arsonist is captured on video starting a fire which might've lead to the death of two people.
At about 3 am on January 26, in Chula Vista, an electric pole caught on fire due to an electric short brought about by the rains, which was intensified by an osprey bird nest on top, said 911 Video News. "The nest caught on fire and partially collapsed. The embers fell onto the road into a homeless encampment below the nest."
The outlet added that they observed emergency personnel trying to clear out the encampment by F Street and Bay Boulevard just off the I-5, and it is uncertain whether any of the nestlings from above were still alive. Still, the nest had been ablaze or emitting smoke for a while. And because of this fire, power was out for some of the nearby homes and businesses.
Just two days prior, 911 Video News was one of the first at the scene in Fallbrook where the I-15 meets with historic 395 by The Good Earth Nursery. Here, the news outlet said that firefighters pulled up to a military vehicle whose trailer had caught fire, likely starting from a faulty tire. "The fire caused a fuel spill of around 150 gallons, and EPA and Hazmat were called in to assist with the hazardous spill."
Across the border, in the Leandro Valle neighborhood of Tijuana on January 23, two people lost their lives, and 30 homes were burned, displacing many families, reported the Telemundo 20 news outlet.
Rafael Carrillo Venegas, the head of the Bomberos de Tijuana, the Tijuana fire department, reported 248 fire incidents during the three Santa Ana wind events last week. He noted that in the 24 hours between January 23 and 24 at 9:00 a.m., firefighters responded to 80 fires, including the 30 homes affected in the Leandro Valle neighborhood and a fire involving a pallet truck.
Adding to the devastation, the NMás news outlet aired a video showing a man intentionally starting a fire. "A witness captured on video," said the outlet, "the moment when a man set fire to a grassland area in Colonia Leandro Valle in Tijuana, where a strong fire broke out shortly after."
As the fires were happening in Tijuana that Thursday, the daygomob_ Instagram page posted a video of a man filming a fire north of Alvarado Canyon Road in Mission Valley. "San Diego woman gets detained after people say that she allegedly started the fire in Fairmount Avenue by the Grantville Trolley Station."
Around the same time that Thursday, the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection was called into a vegetation fire by the Otay Mountain Truck Trail, which would grow into what we now know as the massive Border 2 Fire. (Update: On January 27 at about 7 p.m., it was about 55 percent contained. The Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reported on X that the fire perimeter included about 6,625 acres. The posted photo depicts over two dozen firefighters clad in yellow with the Otay Lake in the backdrop.)
On January 23, at about 7:30 pm, in Escondido, firefighters arrived to find a burning Tesla; the fire was beginning to spread to nearby vegetation, burning just over 1/4 acre, reported 911 Video News. The outlet added that hazmat was called in to address the Tesla's battery and that one individual was rushed to the hospital with unspecified injuries.
On January 21-22, according to the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, by Old Highway 395, there was the Lilac Fire, which burned about 85 acres; the Pala Fire, which burned about 17 acres; and the Riverview Fire in Fallbrook, which burned about an acre.
On January 20, 619 News Media reported a fire at a recycling yard at 1750 Broadway in Chula Vista.
