“Collaborations provide brewers with the opportunity to discuss recipe formulation, unique ingredients, supply chains, new products & techniques, and all of the other unsexy things that go into the back end of crafting a beer," says Burgeon co-founder and Director of Operations Derek van Leeuwen. "‘You do it this way, we do it that way, what happens if we merge both together?’ There’s always something new coming to market that’s designed to improve the brewing process, and we have the potential to generate all-new techniques and approaches through the power of collaboration.” The brewery’s enthusiasm for collabs is on full display this February and March, as it is releasing four beers brewed with different out-of-town breweries who stopped by Burgeon’s 8th Anniversary Invitational back in January.
Old Buds, brewed with ISM Brewing from Long Beach and released on Valentine’s Day, is a 6.6% ABV Wet Coast IPA. Featuring a slew of hops — including Strata, Simcoe Cryo, Simcoe Hyperboost, Citra Dynaboost, Mosaic Dynaboost, Nelson Cryo, and Talus. As might be expected, Old Buds has a heavy hop aroma but still manages to be balanced and an easy sipper.
On the 28th, New Buds, a Hazy IPA brewed with Varietal Beer Co. from Washington’s Yakima Valley, will hit the taps. The juicy, 6.5% ABV ale is brewed with Citra, Comet, and Krush hops to give it flavors of tropical and stone fruit.
The final two products of Burgeon’s anniversary-adjacent collabs will be released on March 14 and were both brewed with Human People, a Seattle brewery founded by two former Modern Times employees. Crystal Dreams is a 6.7% double dry hopped West Coast IPA brewed with Strata, Strata CGX, Strata Hyperboost, Mosaic, Comet, and CTZ hops. The other March release is Tank Top & Scwartz, a 4.3% Schwarzbier — a very different style from the other collabs that will be more malt-heavy and feature roasty chocolate flavors.
Burgeon fans who couldn’t make the quickly sold-out 8th Anniversary Invitational can still get a taste of the anniversary ales the brewery made for the occasion. Trailgate, a 6.7% double dry hopped IPA, and Birthday Suit, a 4% lager, are both still on tap. Meanwhile, Burgeon’s downtown Vista taproom The Grove is gearing up for a smaller-scale anniversary party of its own: on March 1, The Grove will celebrate its first anniversary with a Backyard Party featuring new releases, limited edition merch, and food at the family and dog friendly event.
As Burgeon’s ninth year continues, they remain on the lookout to find which breweries might be invited to collaborate at next year’s anniversary party. Explains Van Leeuwen, “We invite folks whose work we respect, who share our values, and who we feel creatively inspired by. It means a lot to us that the best breweries in the country come all the way out to Carlsbad to party with us for our Anniversary Invitational. Each year, we use this opportunity to collaborate with several new friends who have inspired us over the last 12 months.”
