Live Five: Clikitat Ikatowi, Mark Hoppus, Whitney Shay, Superunloader, Stacy Antonel & the Sea Horses

Superunloader celebrates 30 years, Hoppus looks back

Hoppus, hopping.

Clikitat Ikatowi at the Casbah

April 17

Post-hardcore/emo math rockers Clikatat Ikatowi featured drummer Mario Rubalcaba (Rocket from the Crypt, the Black Heart Procession, Hot Snakes, the Sultans, Earthless). Active in the early to mid-1990s, the band released a demo tape, a full-length album, an EP, and a live album before splitting. Last October, they reunited for the first time in 29 years for a set at the Casbah, where they had played their final concert, and the vibes proved positive enough for this newest reunion performance to be staged at the same Little Italy venue.

Mark Hoppus at Magnolia Performing Arts Center

April 18

Blink-182 vet Mark Hoppus reflects on his life from growing up in Poway during the 1980s and going on to become a worldwide pop-punk rock star in his memoir Fahrenheit-182. The onstage touring version of the book features Hoppus discussing songs he wrote such as “All the Small Things” and “What’s My Age Again,” as well as his mental struggles, and his brush with cancer and journey back to health. He’ll also discuss musical side projects such as +44, his work as a TV host and involvement in various philanthropic efforts, and the recent (and presumably ongoing) Blink-182 reunion.

Whitney Shay & Friends at Sunshine Brooks Theatre

April 19

Whitney Shay is a 2019 Blues Music Award nominee, and she won Best Blues Album and Artist of the Year trophies at the 2019 San Diego Music Awards. She won Best Blues Album at the 2021 SDMAs, and her Stand Up full-length earned a three and a half star review in Downbeat magazine and topped Billboard’s blues chart. This show presented by the Six String Society will feature jazz, blues, soul, and Motown courtesy of Shay’s friends such as Amanda Portela, Kori Gillis, Jason Hanna, Rhea Makarias, and Jody Bagley, along with guitarist Laura Chavez, who won Best Instrumental Guitarist at the 2023 Blues Music Awards in Memphis, and the rest of Shay's band.

Superunloader at Winstons Beach Club

April 19

“We’ve been a band since the early ‘90s and are probably up on the list as one of the longest running San Diego bands,” says drummer Chad Farran of Superunloader. “We started playing shows as Bad Mood Zeus with a different bass player in 1991 and toured the West Coast, with the highlight being an opening show for Santana and Bob Dylan.” After a long period of recording inactivity, in 2017 they released their first new album in nearly 20 years. They’ll stage their 30 year Anniversary party in Ocean Beach at Winstons, the same venue where they recorded part of their album Live and Unfashionable.

Stacy Antonel & the Sea Horses at the Casbah

April 21

Classically trained pianist Stacy Antonel came to local notice while fronting a Coronado-based pop-music band called Velvet Café. After winning the $10,000 grand prize at the conclusion of the first season of 3 Minutes to Stardom, a local singing competition that aired on FOX TV in San Diego in early 2013, she began performing classic country covers as Ginger Cowgirl, and in 2017 moved to Nashville to record her self-titled debut EP, released in 2019. The album led to tours in California, the southeast U.S., the UK, and Germany. The bill includes Chloe Lou & The Liddells and ZB Savoy.
