The Romeros – royal family of guitar

Poway Symphony Orchestra shines in north inland SD County

The Poway Symphony Orchestra is entering its 21st season, which will include three concerts. All three will be performed at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. This season marks music director and conductor John LoPiccolo’s 10th anniversary with the orchestra.

“I’m thrilled to bring some truly exceptional soloists to the stage with the Poway Symphony Orchestra this season,” said LoPiccolo. “Over the last 10 years, it’s been exciting to lead the orchestra through a period of phenomenal growth both in terms of musical talent and repertoire. It’s an honor to build on that history this season by continuing to showcase our orchestra and to bring more beautiful music to Poway and the north inland region of San Diego County.”

LoPiccolo, an accomplished musician with more than 50 years of professional conducting and teaching experience, joined the PSO as music director and conductor in 2014. Over his lengthy career he has led more than 15 orchestras in the U.S. and abroad, and appeared with acclaimed guest artists throughout the country. He has developed educational programs and competitions for young musicians and received awards for his community service.

The season begins on Sunday, November 17, with “A Trip to Spain,” featuring the world-renowned Romeros in a performance of Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto Andaluz for Four Guitars and Orchestra. The concerto was written in 1967 specifically for the Romeros. Based in San Diego, they are often hailed as “The Royal Family of the Guitar,” and their performance of this Spanish gem promises to be an exhilarating fusion of passion and precision. The concert also features Hector Berlioz’s vibrant and adventurous Le Corsaire Overture and Georges Bizet’s beloved Carmen Suites 1 and 2.

On Sunday, March 23, 2025, acclaimed pianist Frederick Moyer will join the Orchestra for Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. The program will also present two iconic pieces by Pyotr Tchaikovsky: the elegant “Polonaise” from the opera Eugene Onegin and the dramatic Swan Lake Suite.

The season concludes on Sunday, May 25, 2025, with Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major. Poway Symphony Orchestra principal bassoonist David Savage will solo. The concert will also include Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 1, a celebration of springtime and renewal, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, Op. 84 which symbolizes the struggle for freedom.

Tickets for the season opener concert on November 17 will be on sale soon at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts box office online at powaycenter.com or by calling 858-748-0505. For more information about the Poway Symphony Orchestra, please visit the website at powaysymphonyorchestra.org.
