Homeless community finds new purpose, place to pitch tents

Encampments, Empowered

Crabtree (inside tent): “I never realized that my very existence as a homeless person was a profound political statement, one protected by the First Amendment of the United States. This is awesome!”

Reginald Crabtree was in a bind. The longtime member of San Diego’s homeless community had just been served with a police order to clear his tent and other belongings from his spot alongside the College Avenue exit from the I-8 freeway, and he wasn’t sure where he was going to spend the night. “I headed toward campus to see if there were any leftovers from the previous night’s fraternity ragers — sometimes, those guys get so drunk they leave unfinished bottles on the lawn. That’s when I saw this big group of kids marching up College Avenue. A lot of them were waving signs about Palestine and freedom, but a lot of them were carrying tents, too. And some of them looked almost as old as I was! I blended right in, and marched along, just to see where they were planning to set up camp. And what do you know, they set it up right on the campus green! Such a nice, sweet spot. As they told me that as long as we don’t tell any Jews that they should go back to Poland, we can sleep here as long as it takes. I don’t know how long that is, but as long as a Jew doesn’t try to take my spot, I’m not going to tell him to go anywhere.”
