Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, trumpet whiz Gilbert Castellanos first earned local cred with the Charles McPherson quintet. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, and then Cal Arts in Los Angeles. The Grand Social event will feature Castellanos and guests mixing it up with songs from the American songbook, Latin jazz, and original compositions and arrangements.
Citing influences such as David Bowie, Pink Floyd, and Hawkwind, Buddha Trixie released their debut four-song EP Real in 2015. The power pop band is on tour supporting Wild Party, who are touring in celebration of the tenth anniversary of their breakthrough album Phantom Pop. The bill includes Bloody Bananas.
Saxophonist Karl Denson bridges fusion jazz and R&B soul with progressive rock. He has played sax with Lenny Kravitz’s band, and he and DJ Greyboy came to local prominence with the Greyboy All Stars, formed in 1997. He’s currently the touring sax player with the Rolling Stones, replacing the late Bobby Keys.
Blues, soul, funk, and Americana artist Shane Hall (the Klay) spent several years fronting Shane Hall & the Diabolicals before going solo. Hall took home a San Diego Music Award for Best Americana, Jazz or Blues Song for his track “Under My Voodoo.” The bill includes Lead Pony and The Band Cope.
The Brian Jones Rock ‘N’ Roll Revival will debut their fourth album Pretty Thang, which features six original songs and three classic blues covers by Bo Diddley, Hound Dog Taylor, and Howlin’ Wolf. The album was recorded in San Diego, mixed and mastered by Mick Kiner, and includes a mix of psychedelic blues, classic, blues, and rock ‘n roll, with original tunes written by local bandleader Brian Jones.
