Over the past two weeks, hundreds and even thousands of migrants who have crossed the border from Mexico and into the United States have been apprehended by the Border Patrol, passed into the custody of an NGO, loaded onto a bus, and then dropped off on the streets of San Diego. City officials were thrilled by the news, as it provides, in the words of City Services spokesman Rick Packemin, “further proof that we are a great American city, much like New York, Chicago, Denver, and Eagle Pass, Texas — all of which have experienced massive influxes of migrants over the past few months, leading to crisis conditions in many cases. Red cities, blue cities — it doesn’t matter. What matters is that these are American cities, home to American people, the most welcoming and generous people on the world. I’m so glad that President Biden reversed all of Trump’s border orders on his first day of office, so thrilled that we’ve had 8 million migrant encounters under his Presidency — with a record 250,000 in December of last year alone! Biden is showing us that he’s not just the leader of America; he’s the leader of the world. A world where compassion doesn’t stop at some arbitrarily defined limit like a national border. A world, God willing, where borders will one day cease to exist, like in that John Lennon song. Of course, some people see only the hardships created by such a policy. And Uncle Joe has a message for them, one that can be worn proudly by every newcomer to our great country, no matter how they got here.”
