LIVE FIVE: Joanna Gerolaga, Kai Kalama, The Drug Hunt, Mike Myrdal, Lauren Leigh

Joanna Gerolaga is a solo performer whose covers of island vibe R&B and pop classics feel right at home on the Mission beach boardwalk. Hailing from Honolulu, Hawaii, Gerolaga uses a loop pedal in concert, layering percussion, bass, melody, and harmonies into each song.

Kai Kalama at Duke’s March 8

Kai Kalama is a one man show, with a large range of musical styles — from Hawaiian to hip-hop. Since being featured on Season 8 of American Idol, Kalama has been further developing his rich, soulful voice. His beach-flavored covers are well suited for Duke’s Hawaiian vibe, which includes staging and seating that overlooks La Jolla Cove.

Alt-country blues rockers the Drug Hunt were originally known as Bad Vibes, releasing their debut album No One’s Safe in 2017. In 2019, the band signed to local Blind Owl Records and changed their name to the Drug Hunt. The bill includes Portland garage-psych punk band Spoon Benders and Spit Vipers.

Mike Myrdal at Cannonball March 12

Mike Myrdal worked in sales at the Active Network for around five years before opting for a full-time career, in music beginning in 2007. He first came to local notice fronting the Dave Matthews tribute band Stepping Feet, before stepping out on his own as a solo acoustic singer-songwriter. His performances feature acoustic music spanning several genres (and decades) of music.

Lauren Leigh at the Belly Up Tavern March 12

Lauren Leigh began singing around the age of five, accompanying the songs in The Little Mermaid until she knew them all by heart. She went on to sing with bands such as the One and Onlys (later known as Redwave), classic country band Wild Heart, tribute act Pink Froyd, High Tide Society, Analog Project, Back to the Garden, and others. The bill includes Leigh’s aunt Eve Selis, as well as Omo Cloud.
