LIVE FIVE: Sitting On Stacy, Matte Blvck, Zack Oakley, Hexa, Jakobs Castle

Ska-flavored alt rockers Sitting on Stacy won the 2018 Kaaboo Discovery competition, as well as opening for the Jonas Brothers in Chula Vista circa 2020. Their recently released third album includes contributions from Fat Mike of NOFX and Pierre Bouvier of Simple Plan. The Little Italy bill includes OB-based Band of Gringos and Saint Luna, an alternative psychedelic rock group founded by SDSU students during the pandemic shutdown.

Matte Blvck at Music Box March 1

Dark electro-pop rockers Matte Blvck features Daniel Corrales, whose previous duo PRGRM essentially ended with the death of co-founding singer Tza, aka Tonya Pugh, in summer 2017. Opening the show will be Los Angeles dark, progressive synth artist Snakes of Russia, elektronaut rockers So Much Blood, and occult goth band Liquid Grey.

Space rock guitarist Zack Oakley is a vet of paisley underground locals such as Volcano and Space Nature, and he’s been known to drum for Pharlee, who’ve shared the Tee Pee Records label with Oakley’s best-known band, Joy. (Both Pharlee and Joy made big splashes at the 2018 Roadburn Festival.) Oakley will debut a new album called Kommune 1. The psychedelic rock bill includes Wild Wild Wets, Fresh Veggies, and Micro Brass, with a Liquid Light Show by Operation:Mindblow.

Hexa at the Casbah March 3

Hexa headlines the Re:Kreate Benefit for K St. Kreative’s Flood Recovery, which features raffles with prizes, as well as live music from the electronic pop project launched in 2015 by Carrie Gillespie Feller (Street of Little Girls, Ilya). Other bands appearing include Owl Be Damned, Crasher, No Knife, Holy Tears, Nanobel, and Mistress 77. Half of all funds raised will go to help K Street Kreative repair flood damage, while the other half will be used to assist tenants who were affected by flood damage.

Jakobs Castle at the Belly Up Tavern March 3

Jakob Nowell’s debut Jakobs Castle album Enter: The Castle, due April 12 via Epitaph Records, is so far preceded by a single for the track “2 Hours Ago.” Nowell also announced that he’s joining up with original Sublime members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson to serve as the new Sublime frontman in place of his late father, Bradley Nowell. The trio are scheduled to perform at Coachella and will announce additional select festival performances in 2024.
