San Diego native Kristi Krause is a singer-songwriter who performs regularly all over town as part of the Acoustic Spot lineup of nightclub talent. A former American Idol contestant, she has also staged concerts in Hawaii and Nashville, with her solo shows covering a variety of genres including pop, country, jazz, and soft rock.
This edition of Acoustic Evenings at the Athenaeum features Billy Galewood, aka Bushwalla, who started his musical career in Cleveland, Ohio, before studying musical theater at NYC’s American Musical and Dramatic Academy. After several collaborations with Jason Mraz, Galewood retired his Bushwalla persona in favor of performing and recording under his given name. This bill also includes Wax and Monette Marino.
“Our music blends our interests in everything from classical and jazz to electronic and independent rock,” according to Headphone, “while the lyrics look at the enigmatic space between connection and detachment, hopefulness and despair.” Also appearing on the OB stage will be A Perfect Tool, a local tribute to both A Perfect Circle and Tool.
The Highwayman Show featuring Tony Suraci and Makayla Phillips pays tribute to country music icons such as Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson. The large band includes horns, in order to cover everything from “Ring of Fire” to iconic tracks and duets by Patsy Cline and the Carter family.
Israel Maldonado was only seven when he joined his first children’s orchestra in his native Tijuana, training in classical guitar at age ten before relocating with his family to Carlsbad, and then Point Loma. A vet of local bands such as Puente and Tres con Todo, his music blends Brazilian, salsa, gypsy, funk, reggae, classical, and rock influences.
