Statement from The Swinging Friar: “It’s true that we’re interviewing for a new manager. But that, in itself, isn’t going to solve our problems, and everybody knows it. Look, it’s clear that San Diego is cursed. It’s not just us. The Chargers never won a Super Bowl while they were here. The Loyal lasted four seasons. The Wave keeps losing in the playoffs. San Diego State made it to the Final Four, sure, but did they win it all? This just isn’t a city where champions play. Not like Los Angeles. But here’s the funny thing: the Dodgers used to be in New York. Moving didn’t hurt them any; in fact, they’ve won more in LA than they ever did in Brooklyn. And here’s another thing: there are five MLB teams in California, and only two in Florida. The state’s biggest city, Jacksonville, doesn’t have a team. The Marlins down in Miami already have a couple of championships, and they’re Johnny-come-latelys. So yes, we’re having a conversation. It helps that the Spanish priests arrived in Florida before the English Protestants: we wouldn’t even have to change the name!”
