Temblad (Spanish for “Tremble”) was founded as a metal cover band before developing original music. The group will debut their album Hallucignosis at the Soda Bar in City Heights on Friday, May 19, with other acts to include Fermentor, Paroxysmal, and Corpsemaker
Blaise Guld first earned local notice fronting rock-n-reggae group Mad Traffic, later signing with Blindspot Records and releasing a number of solo works as well as collaborating with synth wave artist Night Viber. His album Past Forward was nominated for a San Diego Music Award as Best Pop Album. He’ll appear at Side Yard in Barrio Logan on Thursday, May 20.
The local music community is still dealing with the recent death of Dustin Lothspeich, who died unexpectedly of natural causes in his La Mesa home on March 23. The onetime member of Bunny Gang, Old Tiger, Boy King, and Diamond Lakes was a tireless cheerleader of local music, making a name for himself writing about the San Diego scene as well as playing in it. A tribute concert bill at the Casbah on May 21 includes Dead Feather Moon, Oh Spirit, and The Strawberry Moons.
One half of the Mattson 2 alongside his twin brother, Jared Mattson has a new solo album, Peanut, recorded mostly by himself at his own cabin retreat. With tracks featuring a drum machine and stripped down minimalist instrumentation, some tracks are nearly experimental, such as “Please Come Here,” which features him singing in Japanese. He plays the Casbah on May 24, topping a bill that includes Well Well Well and Aloe Vera.
This year’s Guitar Workshop Plus, happening June 25 through 30 at the Sheraton Mission Valley, will include a Blues Seminar taught by local guitar icon Wayne Riker, who has also returned to teaching weekly lessons at Rock and Roll San Diego. The event also features guitarist Alex Skolnick and bassist Nathan East. Riker’s sixteenth CD, Alphabetical Blues Bash (Vol. 2), is due this summer, featuring guest vocalists Lauren Leigh, Shelle Blue, Debora Galan, Josh Taylor, Rebecca Jade, Deanna Haala, Stacy Antonel, Heather Nation, and Nathan Raney.
