Huge Shark drops debut, Mark Langford interprets poems, Alvino & the Dwells split EP, Flogging Molly declines retakes, Lil Maru raps downtown

“Maybe it’s time to say hello again”

On April 3, Huge Shark — the musical project of Valerie Polichar -—will drop a debut full-length called Everything, mastered by Grammy-nominated Joe Lambert (The National, The Black Crowes). Over the course of seven years, Polichar recorded new arrangements of older compositions and penned five new tracks. “Recording work from another part of my life lets me see through a window into my past emotional self,” she says of the record, which is being promoted with a video for “Everything,” and a lyric video for “Lose Your Love,”

Mark Langford

Mark Langford is a classically trained guitarist whose tour support credits include the late John Entwistle (the Who) and Steve Howe (Yes). His upcoming album A Passage contains musical interpretations of sixteen Irish poems, most from the 19th century. Guest bassist John Avila (Oingo Boingo) recorded the album, with additional guest musicians such as guitarists Greg Douglass (Steve Miller Band) and Johnny Vernazza (Elvin Bishop Group), and drummer Larry Grano (Richie Furay).

Alvino and the Dwells

Surf rockers Alvino & the Dwells were founded by members from seminal local bands such as Manual Scan, Lemons Are Yellow, the Answers, Sub Society, and Furious IV. They’ll soon share a split-EP called Capitulo Uno with fellow locals True Stories, featuring five songs from each band and due on May 26 via Spain’s Snap!! Records label. The Alvino selections feature five instrumental songs, including two David Fleminger originals and a surf-styled ELO cover.

Flogging Molly

Irish-punk rockers Flogging Molly have a new three-song EP, ‘Til The Anarchy’s Restored, featuring the previously unreleased title track and one-take performances of their classic songs such as “What’s Left of the Flag.” Says singer-guitarist Dave King, “In a world that seems more divided than ever, this song feels more like a letter reaching out to a neighbor or a friend, and renewing relationships that might seem lost or gone. Maybe it’s time to say hello again.”

Lil Maru

Mexican American rapper Diego Macias, aka Lil Maru, released his breakthrough single in 2020: “Change Up” scored over 20 million streams. His 2021 single “Issues” earned some national press, and other successful releases include “Como You,” “On The Block,” “Get Me On,” and a collaboration with fellow local Lil Weirdo on a video for “Money in the Bank.” Lil Maru will promote his recent From Me 2 You EP with a March 26 performance at House Of Blues, on a bill that includes GirlzLuhDev and 22Gfay.
