Padres GM dismisses criticism of star after he announces plan to opt out of contract

Mach-ado About Nothing?

Eyes on the prize: “One of the ways that Manny leads is by example,” says teammate Hernando Gratis. “His focus on the ultimate goal and the intensity and drive he demonstrates in his pursuit of that goal, is incredibly enriching.”

In 2019, Manny Machado signed a 10-year, $300 million contract with the San Diego Padres; at the time, it was the largest free agent contract in American sports history. But that was then. In the years that followed, other players signed larger contracts, and other teams won the World Series. And as he says, “It’s about the fans,” but also, “at the end of the day, sometimes business is business. The price of eggs, it’s…how much?” So he announced his intention to opt out of that contract at the end of the season. Some fans expressed dismay that the Padres’ leader was threatening to become the Padres’ leaver, but General Manager A.J. Preller was unperturbed. “Manny does eat a lot of eggs,” he said in comments to his bathroom mirror this morning. “Who am I to begrudge him those extra millions? So yes, let’s pay him $350 million to stay here until he’s 41. We’re not just buying talent, we’re buying time. When you think about it, this is actually a win for us. Eggs, eggs, eggs.” Preller’s comments were then cut short as he cut his wrist shaving.
