When Mayor Todd Gloria was elected, he listed homelessness as his first priority, followed by the housing crisis and the city’s Climate Action Plan. “I will be bringing a different point of view when it comes to our need to shift folks to forms of transit that are less consuming of carbon,” he said. So while some where surprised when he signed the Unsafe Camping Ordinance into law, others saw it as a simple reshuffling of priorities. And one of those others was kind enough to leak the following mayoral email to SD on the QT. “I’ve been elected to serve the residents of San Diego, not the transients of San Diego,” writes Gloria. “We don’t make policy designed to benefit tourists, do we? Well, okay, fine, maybe we do, but that’s because they’re adding to our city’s well being, not detracting from it. And these unhoused folks are detracting. I’m not talking about the whining from downtown residents and business owners. I’m talking about the future of San Diego: our environmentally-friendly bicyclists. You think the unhoused have messed up our urban core? Just look what I’ve done to former thoroughfares like 30th Street in North Park! It’s a disaster that makes car owners curse my name on a near-daily basis! But the sacrifice was worth it to make life better for the bicycle enthusiasts who will one day replace those car owners! Unless, of course, THE UNHOUSED STEAL THEIR BIKES AND CHOP THEM UP FOR SPARE PARTS. These jokers aren’t even paying taxes on their little business venture. I want them out. Now.”
