“I used to perform nearly full-time in cover bands, but left the live music world behind many moons ago to ‘find myself’ when it came to the music industry,” says singer-songwriter Audrey Callahan, whose original single “Break This Cage” drops May 1. She describes her return to the stage as “A highly immersive show made up of my own original music that can be best described as personal development meets aggressively positive singing, intertwined with mesmerizing dancers, audience engagement, impactful visuals, story-telling, and connection.”
“I think of the bass as an orchestra,” says jazz bassist Mark Dresser, who’ll present selections his upcoming solo album Tines Of Change on May 8 at UCSD’s The Loft. The evening includes a solo performance by Dresser, followed by a second set featuring poet Jerome Rothenberg. Due May 5, the album was performed on experimental four-string and five-string basses crafted for Dresser by Colorado-based luthier Kent McLagan. “I realized that the bass has so many different and distinct voices,” says Dresser, “I wanted to be able to access them and make them speak to one another.”
Synth pop post-punk rockers Twin Ritual were founded by singer-keyboardist Laura Levenhagen (Le Chateau) and bassist Anthony Ramirez (Glass Spells). On April 22, they’ll debut a new album in City Heights at the Soda Bar, for a bill that includes Glume (whose just-released sophomore album features collaborations with Rufus Wainwright and Sean Ono Lennon) and a Disco Goth DJ set.
The Atlantic Years limited edition box set will feature all five of Ratt’s albums for the label, all of which earned gold, platinum, or multi-platinum sales status. Due June 9 and remastered on 180g black vinyl, the collection comes in a side-loading box and includes a “Nobody Rides For Free” 7-inch single, 12 page replica tour book featuring unpublished photos from the band’s personal archives, an 11x17 wanted poster, bumper sticker, replica backstage pass, and a guitar pick.
The April 21 edition of Acoustic Evenings With Jefferson Jay at the La Jolla Athenaeum Music and Arts Library features Billy Galewood, who developed his acoustic/hip-hop sound under the name Bushwalla before going by his given name as of around 2016. The bill includes Wax and a performance by host Jefferson Jay. The May 5 edition of Acoustic Evening will host jazz guitarist Fred Benedetti, soulful bluegrass band MohaviSoul, and guitar-mandolin-banjo duo Trails and Rails.
