DJ Tim Pyles quits 91X-FM - again
New TV show leaves Loudspeaker minus 1 of 3 hosts
DJ Tim Pyles has left 91X-FM. His last broadcast as co-host of the long running local music show Loudspeaker was on May 12. Pyles had a long history with the station, starting off as an intern and moving to DJ from 1998-2004. Following an eight-year stint at FM94.9 with his Sunday Local Pyle show, he returned to 91X in 2014.
Pyles declined to speak about the specifics of the split, but 91X Program Director Garett Michaels noted in an e-mail, “We appreciate Tim’s many contributions to 91X, Loudspeaker, and his support of the San Diego Music Community over the years.”
Pyles won’t be off-air for long. Previously a part of the on-air talent at KNSD-TV’s defunct late night music program Sound Diego, he’s working on a new television music show, co-hosted by Aloha Taylor. “We’re filming it at Loft 100 Studios,” Pyles tells the Reader. “We’re going to stretch the concept of what a local TV music show can be. One thing I’m really happy about is that, although the focus is on new music and events happening now, we’re also going to be able to celebrate some cool things about our music community’s history.”
Pyles will continue working with the Casbah promoting shows, as well as booking performers onto the Wonderbus. He’ll also continue his online support for local acts via The Local Pyle Podcast for Olas Media and will have a pair of shows airing each Thursday on KXFM (104.7) based in Laguna Beach; The FTP New Music Show (10 pm – 11 pm) and a new still-untitled local music program (11 pm to midnight). “I’m trying to stay busy,” says Pyles. “But when it comes down to it, as long as I can promote the music that I love and get by doing it, I’m a happy man.”
Loudspeaker, now in its 34th year on air, will carry on with co-hosts Lou Niles and Andrew Rowley. “It’s an iconic show, that provides an important community service,” says Garett Michaels. “It’s great to have Rowley and Lou leading the way with their prior history, and longtime involvement with the show. They are both passionate champions of our great and diverse local music scene.”
