Cardinal in a Cage, Compatientis Mater
- Cardinal in a Cage
- No London Tower racks my wretched frame,
- No dynast’s wrath bears down upon my neck.
- Brave words unvoiced by Thomas gilt his name.
- Alas, my feeble words bring mine to wreck.
- A solitary window stirs my sense:
- I whiff the fulsome flames that whelm the spire
- Of Holy Mother Church in sore distress,
- I hark the dub’ia bell of hushed inquire.
- Now, joustless, cell-bound, where I would not go,
- The Global Prince serene upon the wing,
- Our ruddered Barque looks drifting to the shoal.
- Sweet Christ, Thou called my life to now what thing?
- As Tom, through walls, transposed his blood to Thee,
- Dost I, my Lord, join battle on my knees!
- For Cardinal Pell
- Compatientis Mater
- A mother walks a road beside her Son
- And gathers every lash’ed bloody rose,
- And though His crown’s assured, His vict’ry won,
- She’ll share these flow’rs of grace to soothe His woes
- Another mother salts the sea with tears,
- The sea corrupted by Carthage and Rome.
- A distant ship is fogged within her fears:
- Her prayerful beacon guides the ship back home.
- And you have known the sorrow of love’s loss;
- You’ve balmed your child’s wound along these years.
- And through your searching silence to the Cross
- Will, as he grasps for you, to Christ be near.
- Our Savior, love enfleshed, has given leave
- Of part of Him as mothers may bequeath.
David DeCleene
David DeCleene, born in 1951, hails from Oak Park, IL. He attended Quigley North High School and graduated from St. Ignatius High School, both in Chicago. He studied Chinese at Seton Hall University, in Orange, NJ, and Taiwan Normal University, Taipei, working as a journalist at both the China Post English Daily and Asian Sources Magazine. He received a BA in English from the University of Hawaii and went on to teach at St. Joseph High School in Hilo, Hawaii for 20 years. Now retired, he substitute teaches in Hawaii and Wisconsin, where he and his wife Susan split their time. They have two grown children.
